should I not tell my friends that I read and enjoyed that story? :embarasse
My favorite part is when he wrote a program whose sole purpose was to create a directory in assembler, compiled it, and then typed in the hex code on the broken machine. Pure inspiration.

Here it is, a linux timeline. Much more accurate than the unix one I posted a while ago:
http://www.kde-files.org/content/files/44218-linuxdistrotimeline-6.8.2.png

I actually throught Suse forked off RedHat, since they're an rpm distro.

It's intetresting to note that few of the original distros are still running, in most cases needs have changed and the project was abandoned or forked with another etc. RedHat is an exception here, they founded a company around their distro and are still going strong.

It's for booting off portible media and operating on low spec machines. Fine goal, and probably the best named distro out there.

Though, that said, that old saying that letting the programmers name the distro is like letting marketers write them is more than a little true.

Not very effective, /dev/dsp is the sound ouput, it would take ages to get enough sound through it to overwrite a whole drive. Why not just use /dev/zero?
