Yes, sounds fine to me. By the way, there is a way you can make your ext3 partition be read by Windows. But I think it will be only readable. And I advice you to install XP on a FAT32 partition due to mounting problems with NTFS and Linux.

And here's a question, why do you want to give XP 15 GB? Isn't that being generous to an ungenerous OS? :D

Actually, my initial reason for that was because I do a whole bunch of video editing and graphics work, which takes up a lot of space... but now that I think about it, if I can access my ext3 partition in Xp, I think I'll cut that 15GB down to about 3 :D

btw I've been treating my system like rubbish ever since I decided to wipe my drive and convert to Ubuntu. It's a lot of fun, putting things everywhere and completely disregarding my traditional file/folder structure... kind of like working in a sandbox, only knowing that I'm doing some real damage :D

Haha, done and done :)

Funny how the poll only reads 8 for Linux, but we (I'm going to have to get used to saying "we" :p) feel so powerful and superior :ferocious

The Bolshevik revolution was carried out by like 12 people, but they were pretty powerful ;)

Ok, I'm nearly ready to do the big wipe, so I need final confirmation here just to settle my nerves.

How does this sound?

Windows: 5GB
Ubuntu /: 15GB (btw why do I need 15GB for this? Can I work safely with 5-10?)
Swap: 1GB
Ext3: 50GB

This week marks the fifth anniversary of the beloved Windows XP operating system. And I think in honor of this birthday, we will spread the love towards the often-hated Windows XP operating system. (If you recall, we did a similar thing for the iPod earlier this week).

With Windows Vista on the horizon, it is important to look back at the life of Windows XP and commemorate it with a list of why we love that old workhorse of an operating system.

• The Right Mouse Button
Sure, the competitor has been supporting the right mouse button for quite some time now, but they still neglect to include it in their packaged mice or touchpads on the laptops. XP has always supported the beloved right mouse button and always will. How else can you quickly steal images from the internet without the right mouse button?

Jump for the rest of the <3.

• Application Support
Don't get me wrong, the competitors have some cool software suites, but if there is a program out there, then there is a good chance it was made for XP, or has a version available for XP.

• Gaming
Hands down, XP is a gaming machine. Gaming companies always make an XP version, and very few port their game over to the competitor's operating system. Where would we be as a society without Solitaire, Freecell and Minesweeper. And don't forget Pinball.

• Customizability
Sure prepackaged computers with Windows XP are great (and cheap, see next bullet-point). But what if you want to build your own? Windows makes it easy as hell. Feel like upgrading components? Still easy. Half the time XP already has the drivers. Boy, this new video card sure is swell! And don't even get me started on the awesome case mods that always accompany XP-powered machines.

• Machine Competition
There are hundreds of companies out there manufacturing machines to run XP. This drives the prices of machines down. Want a complete desktop unit for $300? It's possible with XP.

• Speed
The competition may think they are cool with the animated enlarging icons, but that shit eats the ram, hardcore. XP uses less ram and runs a lot faster.

• New Technology
What's that? Core 2 Duo? 64-bit processing? SLI graphics? Oh, XP has been doing that for ages now.

• Media Center
XP saw the addition of Windows Media Center edition. And hell, they have been doing it for years. The addition of MCE to the XP operating system saw the first steps of home entertainment and PC integration. What's that? iTV in a year? Oh, neat, if you like old ideas.

• Versions
Five years later, it is still Windows XP. Sure, they have had some service packs, but that is a hell of a lot better than buying a new update every year named after a silly animal.

• Piracy
Raise your hand if you have ever used a version of XP that wasn't exactly purchased. Windows Genuine Advantage has since hindered that possibility, somewhat, but still. XP helped kick start a generation of kids that do not pay for software with the help of P2P programs like BitTorrent, as of late. Free is always good.

Happy Birthday, XP. May you live long and prosper, and may Vista give us the same awesomeness that you did. – Travis Hudson

I think 15 GB for ubuntu is perfect. You will want to explore many applications in the beginning. Let it be 15, you have lots of other space. And it is not that you are forbidden to save personal files on the / partition :p

Ahh fair enough.

The 'not saving personal files on the / partition' thing is just me being picky... I'm a little anal about how everything's structured on my pc :)

I'm just about done backing everything up, but it's 4am now... do I spend another couple of hours installing my OS's or do the sensible thing and wait until tomorrow morning? :wallbang:

i see jeeks and martin got you covered. but before i go out for the night i gotta wish you luck, so, good luck. ;)

p.s. those ext2/3 drivers for windows work perfectly well, you can read and write with them and, most importantly, they are stable. never had a problem whatsoever.

Ever tried large writes? Any performance problems?

Graham: You don't have to make it 15, but if you do you'll be very comfortable. Don't you want to be?

No, not personal files. Personal files usually go in /home/graham. But big files like movies etc are nicely stored outside of /, at least I like it that way.

Well, there is a reason I'm switching to Linux :) Ok so there are many, but comfort's defo. one of them!

Martin, I know you fancy me and all that, but naming your folders after me is pushing it...

...sorry, it's 5:20 am :disagree:

EDIT: I'm all ready; let's get this show on the road! Note: It's 5:40 so I might have a snooze before I finish the whole installation process, so don't worry too much if I don't post for a while.

This is exciting... I kind of feel like installing a bunch of viruses before I wipe my disk :D
