Euro stars are linked with new Dubai event
A glittering mini-tournament involving Juventus, AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Santos is being planned for Dubai in January. Though the tournament has yet to be confirmed, it is scheduled for the first week in January, during the European winter break. Brazilian giants Santos have confirmed their interest, and 7DAYS understands regular Dubai visitors Bayern are also pencilled in.
Italian giants Juve and Milan have been linked with the tournament, and more details on their potential involvement are likely to be revealed later this week. Any tournament during next month would clash with the inaugural Dubai Football Challenge (DFC) which will be held at the Al Nasr Club on January 7 and 9. Santos announced on their official website that they were offered $2 million to compete in the tournament, and said the proposal was being seriously considered.
Club president Marcelo Teixeira said: “Training would be damaged and we would have the chance of preparing the squad by facing teams from the very top of world soccer.” Contacted by 7DAYS, the UAE Football Association said they had yet to receive an official request for approval. The UAE national team is one of four sides competing in the DFC, along with Iran, Stuttgart and Hamburg.
The impact of the DFC would inevitably be reduced should the second, proposed tournament be given the green light to proceed at the same time. Bayern were approached to compete in the DFC, though the two parties could not reach an agreement over money. Bayern have spent their winter break here in Dubai for the last three seasons, and this year played Iran in Tehran.
Meanwhile, Iran’s presence in the DFC is in doubt because of a FIFA ban on them competing internationally. FIFA imposed the ban because of claims of government interference on the Iranian FA.
