He'd get murdered in the first few minutes. Defending today is disgraceful, absolutely horiffic. The best defenders of today aren't able to tackle. Imagine how good Baggio or DP would be today. Scoring 50-60 goals per season, when defenders are merely watching like innocent bystandards as forwards pass by, seems plausible.
What younger people don't understand is that it's not that Messi isn't talented enough to beat those good defenders from the past. he is. Although they were better readers of the game, they were no supermen. Agile forwards were still able to get past defenders with ease.
The difference is what was allowed then by the referees. Tackles/fouls that grant easy yellow/red cards today were nothing but a "get up and carry on". He'd probably leave defenders behind but that would come with a price. They'd try to stop him the violent way and that rarely granted a card.
Messi breaking all those records have to be taken with a pinch of salt. He has a safe environment to play in, something players of the past didn't and has no competition except from Ronaldo. You want a better argument than a 35 year old Romário being the only one getting close to Messi/Ronaldo stats in the 00's, a 35 year old Romário! That should clearly show you the well has dried and Messi/Ronaldo are simply the one-eyed kings in the land of the blind.
Just imagine what Maradona or even Romário would have achieved (beyond what they already have) if they had no competition, defenders who can't read to play against and played in safer times.
