The thing is, it doesn't really do anything with regards to his injury. It's purely a confidence builder (it might be that he himself acknowledges that).
It's a (perhaps thicker than regs) beefed up scrum cap from rugby and I know from personal experience that they do nothing but protect from minor bruising and scratches. In fact, at least one study has shown padding such as that actually increased the amount of injuries among rugby players - most likely due to an inflated and false sense of protection causing them to go in harder. Obviously, it goes with the story that one sport is a bit more physical than the other but the general concept of foam padding remains.
