Zalayeta Suspension Cancelled
Napoli's appeal to the Federal Court was successful as they agreed to revoke the two-match ban inflicted on striker Marcelo Zalayeta after an alleged dive to win a penalty against Juventus last weekend.
Napoli striker Marcelo Zalayeta's two-match ban for an alleged dive during last weekend's match against Juventus, which Napoli controversially won 3-1, has been canceled after the club appealed to the Federal Court.
The Uruguayan player had been suspended by the Disciplinary Commission on the grounds that no contact was made between him and Juve keeper Gigi Buffon on the incident that led to Napoli being awarded their second penalty of the match.
They saw it as a dive, then, but the Federal Court, whom Napoli made an emergency appeal to, agreed that Zalayeta had only jumped to avoid a possibly dangerous collision with former Juventus team mate Buffon.
A number of coaches publicly expressed their disdain at the decision to ban the player, including Roberto Mancini of Inter, Carlo Ancelotti of Milan, and Luciano Spalletti of Roma.
Now Zalayeta will be regularly available to play against Fiorentina on Wednesday evening.
