Del Piero Should Start - Zoff

Former Italy coach Dino Zoff believes Roberto Donadoni should start with Alessandro Del Piero for the game against Romania.

The Azzurri take on Victor Piturca’s side in their second group C clash on Friday as they look to make amends for their woeful start to the campaign.

Donadoni is expected to make some major changes in the starting XI and many believe Del Piero will get the nod.

Zoff, who coached the Azzurri and led them to the Euro 2000 final, is backing Del Piero to start against the Romanians.

“I remember in 2000 he missed two great chances in the final, but those days are long gone,” said Zoff.

“Del Piero has come off the back of a great season but I’m not sure if he will play but everything seems to suggest that he will, looking at the way he has been playing recently, he should.”

Zoff is also confident that Donadoni will change things around after the bashing he received from the Italian media following the 3-0 defeat to Holland.

“When you lose, there will always be criticisms, it’s logical,” said Zoff.

“But I believe Donadoni knows exactly what to do now.”

The Azzurri need to ensure they beat Romania as anything less than maximum points will see them exit the tournament earlier than expected.

Del Piero Doesn't Scare Us - Piturca
Romania coach Victor Piturca admits that he is not worried by Alessandro Del Piero as the Azzurri striker is set to start against Romania on Friday.
»Comments (3) Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom Italy clash with Piturca’s side in their second group C fixture and they know that only a win is necessary if they are to have a chance of progressing to the next round of the competition.

Roberto Donadoni is expected to shuffle things around but Piturca doesn’t seem phased by the Azzurri’s potential threat up front.

“Del Piero is a dangerous player but we will have a strategy that will block him from doing anything,” said the coach.

“We have several players in our side who are Italian football experts and so we are not worried.

“I think De Rossi and Del Piero will start against us but we will implement the right strategies.”

Del Piero has been impressive in training recently and he is likely to get the nod from Roberto Donadoni on Friday.

The Serie A Capocanoniere will be hoping to fire his side to maximum points against the Romanians.

It’s crunch time for the Azzurri and they now have to show their mettle and prove their critics wrong as they fight for the European Championship lives.

I don't think Del piero will be blamed. Camoranesi and Di natale didn't deliver, now it's his turn and possibly Cassano's. If he fails, then tough luck, I hope he proves us all right though. At least this time you can expect Italy to throw everything they have since it's their last chance to prove themselves. This may just be the climate Italy thrives in, when they are under massive pressure.

It will be phenomenal if the legend can get Italy back into this tournament. He may very well be the hero but I don't think it's him that is the most motivated player in the squad. Ale has nothing to prove while others do.

I predict De Rossi is going to end up as the hero in the end. It kind of all falls into place for him. He has had a brilliant season with Roma but dramatically lost the scudetto to Inter. He wasn't picked for the first game despite his outstanding form, he's young and has a lot to prove to the world. I believe he alone can give twice as much as Gatusso and Ambrosini.

Cassano is another player who is desperate to prove himself. He has always been considered a great talent but never really shined at the big stage. I'll never forget his goal in Euro 2004 when despite Italy going out in the end in dubious fashion, Cassano really did step up to the plate. He may be required to do so and it couldn't have come at a better time. After retaining his form at Sampa, and being beaten ina football game by Italy's assistant coach, he will definitely be one of the more driven players in the Italian squad.

Against Holland, Italy lacked soul. They gave up too easilly and didn't show the Azzuri mentality we are all accustomed to. With a team taht was considered the oldest starting 11 in Euro hisory, it was clear they lacked the proper mentality. In fact, they reminded me a lot of a certain overaged Milan that was boring and all over the place at times.

Hopefully, with some youth injected into the starting 11 and experienced WC winners determined to silence the doubters, Italy stand a very good chance.

I had this vision last eve: Del Piero scores two goals against Romania and while teammates join up to congratulate him, Zambrotta receives an open-handed face push by Ale. If that were to come true (although it won't because the man oozes class), it would be my Henri Delaunay trophy.

I Want To Be Decisive - Del Piero
Evergreen striker Alessandro Del Piero talked about Italy's crucial match against Romania tomorrow, in which he will certainly start.
»Comments (5) Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom Tomorrow world champions Italy face a do-or-die match against Romania in their second Group C match at Euro 2008. Coach Roberto Donadoni will likely make at least four changes to the side that lost 3-0 to Holland, and one player who's sure to come in is Serie A top scorer Alessandro Del Piero.

The Juventus captain will also lead the Azzurri in this match, after goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was handed the captain's armband in the first game. This will most probably give him even more motivation to be decisive for Italy tomorrow.

"Tomorrow against Romania I want to be decisive," said Alex. "I will play alongside Luca Toni as a supporting striker."

It seems that Donadoni has removed the mystery on how the team will play, recognising the importance of a player like Del Piero for Italy at the moment.

The 33-year-old is the most experienced member of the Italian squad, having taken part in every tournament for the Azzurri since Euro 1996.

Don calls on Juve duo

Italy boss Roberto Donadoni has indicated that Alessandro Del Piero and Giorgio Chiellini will play against Romania tomorrow.

It’s already do or die for the world champions after they lost their opening game 3-0 to Holland.

With pressure mounting on Donadoni, the Azzurri know that anything less than a win against a tenacious Romania side that held France would be a disaster.

The Press have called for changes to be made in the Italy line-up and it seems that they will be appeased.

“I will make three or four changes to the team that I picked to face Holland,” Donadoni revealed.

“Along with Alex, I will hand a chance to Chiellini and I will rest some of the players who have played most.

“I see Del Piero playing further behind the striker and more in the middle. Tomorrow we need the best from him and everyone else.”

Despite a demoralising start to the week, Don seemed eerily calm ahead of his D-day.

“How do I feel about things? Today in traing I saw a side full of life, desire and charge,” he said.

“But I mustn’t give any guarantees because it was the same of the eve of the Holland game.

“Romania are a well organised and close-knit unit, but we will have 90 minutes to score.

“We must be patient and control our opponents and try to find the energy because we will have lots of running to do.”
