I don't think Del piero will be blamed. Camoranesi and Di natale didn't deliver, now it's his turn and possibly Cassano's. If he fails, then tough luck, I hope he proves us all right though. At least this time you can expect Italy to throw everything they have since it's their last chance to prove themselves. This may just be the climate Italy thrives in, when they are under massive pressure.
It will be phenomenal if the legend can get Italy back into this tournament. He may very well be the hero but I don't think it's him that is the most motivated player in the squad. Ale has nothing to prove while others do.
I predict De Rossi is going to end up as the hero in the end. It kind of all falls into place for him. He has had a brilliant season with Roma but dramatically lost the scudetto to Inter. He wasn't picked for the first game despite his outstanding form, he's young and has a lot to prove to the world. I believe he alone can give twice as much as Gatusso and Ambrosini.
Cassano is another player who is desperate to prove himself. He has always been considered a great talent but never really shined at the big stage. I'll never forget his goal in Euro 2004 when despite Italy going out in the end in dubious fashion, Cassano really did step up to the plate. He may be required to do so and it couldn't have come at a better time. After retaining his form at Sampa, and being beaten ina football game by Italy's assistant coach, he will definitely be one of the more driven players in the Italian squad.
Against Holland, Italy lacked soul. They gave up too easilly and didn't show the Azzuri mentality we are all accustomed to. With a team taht was considered the oldest starting 11 in Euro hisory, it was clear they lacked the proper mentality. In fact, they reminded me a lot of a certain overaged Milan that was boring and all over the place at times.
Hopefully, with some youth injected into the starting 11 and experienced WC winners determined to silence the doubters, Italy stand a very good chance.
