I love how Kluivert played - it shows again that he plays best when the entire nation is on his back! Now let's hope he can keep this up.

Van der Vaart was excellent, man of the match if you ask me. A shame Makaay had knee-problems though.

I wonder what'll happen Wednesday when RVN returns from suspension. I'd hate to see Van Hooijdonk put back on the bench again, he played a superb match!

Before the kick-off, former Holland coach Louis van Gaal expressed his surprise that current coach, Dick Advocaat, had decided not to make use of both wings. Instead the former Glasgow Rangers trainer opted for the use of Andy van der Meyde on the right wing and to leave the left wing blank.

Although Holland dominated the first half they were unable to tame the Austrians with their timid actions until in the 30th minute of the first half when Patrick Kluivert, who formed a swinging tandem with Ajax ace Rafael van der Vaart, cleverly fended off the ball before passing to the Ajax midfielder, who then blasted home from 25 meters for the 1-0.

However, just 4 minutes later Austria drew level after Pogatetz rounded off a scramble ball.

In the second act, Edgar Davids and hopelessly performing Boudewijn Zenden were left behind in the dressing room after Advocaat finally realized that the Austrians could only be defeated with an all or nothing offensive, allowing winger Marc Overmars and striker Pierre van Hooijdonk to make their appearance.

The changes had a positive effect on Holland and after a series of missed chances in front of goal, Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert was rewarded for his fantastic performance, when he swooped by two defender before rounding off from 15 meters.

Four minutes later, Philip Cocu headed in a Marc Overmars corner for the final 3-1 score-line.

With Wednesday's match against the Czech Republic, Advocaat will seriously have to view the video's of this match and watch the below par performances of Boudewijn Zenden, Michael Reiziger, Andy van der Meyde and Turkish tanned Frank de Boer.

Oranje fought themselves passed a very tough Austrian side Saturday in Rotterdam to assure a second place in the group. There were plenty of analyses afterwards; "With Pierre van Hooijdonk on the pitch, we were able to control the high balls and create real danger in the second half", Mark van Bommel explains, "We needed his heading skills to get passed those tall Austrian defenders"

Coach Advocaat:
"We played good football at times and especially the first part of the second half satisfied me. We struggled with the defending play from the Austrians at first, we couldn't use the right wing and Davids and Zenden were hard to reach as well. The equalising goal by the Austrians was simply due to bad defending, Kluivert had his back turned at his marker, for example. In the second half, Pierre van Hooijdonk was an extra player up front to whom the ball could be played which we needed. We played more opportunistic in the second half and it paid off. It's good to win a match like this after all the criticism and we remain unbeaten since I became coach. We won't be playing this attacking against the Czechs though, they are better than we are at this point so defending is the key."

Frank de Boer:
"We worked our asses off in the first half but we just couldn't get through their defence. We were more aggressive in the second half and with Pierre AND Patrick up front, we could play some high balls in as well. Fortunately we quickly scored th 2-1."

Rafael van der Vaart:
"It was a nice goal indeed, yeah. My best game of the season so far. The criticism prior to the match wasn't so much directed at me but it's important that a player shows he's part of a team, a group as a whole. It didn't matter that I was both forward and playmaker today (Van der Vaart played behind the strikers when Van Hooijdonk came onto the field --- ed.) as I did a good job in both positions."

Mark van Bommel:
"I think we showed enthousiasm and the desire to win today. It was important that we did, after all the criticism. I'm not sure if this is the way to play against the Czechs ... After all, Austria managed to score against us with this tactic and the Czech front line is about ten times stronger!"

Hans Krankl, Austrian coach:
"Holland deserved to win today, we had too much trouble with the substitutes Overmars and Van Hooijdonk. Just when I thought we might be able to get back into it, Kluivert scored and I realised the match was over."

Congratulations Holland! I've always liked them, even though they beat Korea 5-0, and I had to wake up at 4:00am to watch it...on my birthday :down:. They have some of the greatest players in the world, and were easily the most noteworthy absentees from WC2002...

Dick looking for calm

DICK ADVOCAAT has revealed that he hopes a clear the air meeting will get his Holland side back on course for European Championship glory.
Holland's Euro 96 challenge was wrecked by infighting and it appears their 2004 campaign could go the same way if internal squabbles are not ironed out.

Juventus midfielder Edgar Davids and Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy squared up during a recent training session, as simmering tensions in rival camps threatened to boil over.

Advocaat is aware of the troubles and has moved to alleviate the tension as he aims to steer his country towards Portugal.

"I have the best players in Europe but they show no willingness to accept things from each other," he told the Mail on Sunday.

"They are all big players playing for big European teams. But even the biggest names and the biggest players should be able to put each other right or correct each other without it resulting in problems."

Advocaat does not want to ditch the likes of Davids and Patrick Kluivert, as he added: "I am not going to do that. The players have not played well, but they need to get their act together.

"The way Kluivert is treated in his own country is scandalous. I will stick by him. He is a fantastic goalscorer and I respect him a lot. Davids has a different personality, but he still does a fabulous job on the pitch."

Advocaat feels there may be light at the end of the tunnel, as the players held a crisis meeting to ease the tension.

He revealed: "They all decided to go in a room for an hour on their own.

"They assured me they had really good talks.

"You can imagine what it was like after what has gone off, but I hope they have sorted things out."

DAVIDS OUT AGAINST CZECHS

Holland may have to miss Juventus midfielder Edgar Davids for their crucial Euro 2004 qualifier against the Czech Republic this Wednesday. Davids was forced to leave the field at half time with a groin injury during Holland's match against Austria on Sunday and was unable to train with the squad on Sunday. Davids will now undergo Medical test today to reveal the extent of the damage after which a decision will made as to whether he is able to play this Wednesday.

I'm not judging him on two games, I'm judging him on his entire NT career under Advocaat. He played terrible most of the times and his ego is bigger than the country can fit. He is slowly poisoning the group.

And yeah, Davids is that bad. In the last two gatherings of the NT, he had fights with Van Bommel and Van Nistelrooy, behaved like an arse on interviews, and played horrible matches on top of that. But Advocaat is one of those coaches who sticks with older and experienced players which is the only reason Davids was still called up for the NT. I'm actually happy he's not coming to Prague!

Van Bommel would be a great leader of the new generation but he's not getting a chance because of Davids. Maybe now that Davids won't play, the coach will see that!

He was always kind of an enigma though, wasn't he? Or was there a certain turning point?

On a soccer level, the one thing that always bugged me about him was how on one hand he's very gifted technically blabla but he can be so damn naive (or inattentive) that he ALWAYS loses control to his marker pulling the stuff one step too far. It's so damn annoying to watch that, knowing that an amateur like myself would know when to quit to avoid that, at least after the 23423th time.

Well he was always a bit of a stand-out of course but I have the feeling it has got worse over the last few years especially.

Maybe that has more to do with the old generation breaking up and new players coming into the NT than with Davids himself but....

I'm very sorry to hear all that about Davids. It's strange that, still, he gained his fame playing for the NT, during the Euros 2000, and then at his clubs, or at least this is the universal opinion.
