Ok, time for me to jump into this thread.

I've gained about 17kg in the past year, due to my diet being pretty, and my activity dropping down to zero (no more soccer or jogging, plus I quit my job and started working from home).

I finally decided to do something about it, so for the past two weeks I've been very strict about what and when I eat, cutting out sugary and high-carb foods and liquid calories.

I'm currently nursing a bad ankle so I can only run a little bit at a time (mostly going for 30-40 minute walks), and I just went out last night and bought a 20kg dumbbell set and 15kg barbell set.

I'll let y'all know how it goes :)
17 in one year is pretty insane :D.

If you've got a bad ankle, do a lot of mobility and strength drills for your ankle, but also do some extra glute activation work. Ankle sprains can prevent your glutes from firing and when that happens you're in trouble.

Perhaps you could combine cardio with weight lifting by following the Tabata protocol?

It is indeed. I used to think I had a pretty decent metabolism, but I realised this year that it's pretty much all about my level of activity.

Prior to this year I was playing soccer every week (training + match), indoor soccer with mates + walking during my lunch breaks at work. As you can see from my avatar, it put me in marathon shape :)

I don't know anything about glute activation and the Tabata protocol, but I'll have a look. Thanks for the info mate.

Try to, but I know you're busy with kid and everything.

I just came back. I did chest, some crazy ass super sets and it literally killed me.

Intensity is the key I say. Fuck nutrition.

I have to say I disagree, in terms of being in shape, diet is the most important thing
In terms of I need to perform I don't have to care about the diet so much. Of course eating unhealthy is just unhealthy. And since my main excerpter is running, I am really relaxed on burning any extra unnecessaries.
