We bought Boniek and Platini in a single summer after they starred on the 3rd and 4th place teams at the 1982 WC. We basically did the exact same thing Madrid just did with James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos (aside from the fact transfer fees were obviously less ridiculous in 1982 even including inflation). We bought them to push us over the hump in Europe, as before the late 1970s Juventus for some reason had pretty much ignored European competition, and that changed with the arrival of Trapattoni in 1976. Under his tenure we were one of the highest spending clubs in all Europe from 1976-1986.
And guess what... Being one of the biggest spending clubs in all of Europe led us to win every single UEFA trophy that was available. In 10 years. 6 Serie A titles. 2 Coppa Italias. 1 European Cup (CL). 1 UEFA Cup (Europa League but more important as was for 2nd place European league teams). 1 UEFA Cup Winners Cup. 1 European Super Cup. 1 Intercontinental Cup. It's still a European record to have won every single possible title, and all within 10 years under a single manager. And we spent a huge amount of money to do so. Which was why that defeat to Hamburg in our first CL final was so disappointing, as we had spent millions over the previous few years. And then redemption against Liverpool.
Don't kid yourselves into thinking Juventus wasn't one of the richest, and biggest spending clubs in Europe in the past. We most certainly were.
