If you are referring to me, then you are clearly the retard. I never said he doesn't deserve credit, but there is reason to remain skeptical and doubtful of his abilities.
He has done well, but the majority of the credit should go to Conte for accomplishing what he has (albeit in a rather weak Serie A), given the quality of the squad at his disposal.
You have every reason to remain skeptical, because as hard as this is going to believe for some people, I am not totally convinced yet.
Building a team to get to the CL and compete for a Scudetto is one thing (Although I have to admit that I was very pleasantly surprised that the latter did in fact occur), but building a team to stay at the top of the Serie A mountain and compete in the CL is another matter altogether different.
But, he does deserve the chance to do it. He has at least earned that much. Credit needs to be given to him, and this isn't a matter of how much of a percentage of it needs to be doled out between him, conte, and the players, because the fact of the matter is that this was a total team effort.
And let's not forget the fact that this scudetto winning team was primalrily built on players that he brought over the last two years, and I'm not even talking about the ones who were brought in this year.
I am pointing to players such as Barzagli, Bonucci, Matri, Pepe, Quagliarella, who were brought in 2 years ago that all played vital roles, to varying degrees, of the team's success this year.
Barzagli was an absolute revelation, Bonucci found himself in the 2nd half of the year to be the defender that we all hoped he would be, Matri had some vital goals, Pepe was instrumental in this teams success (Please don't faint upon reading that), and Quag, after trying to rediscover himself all season after a bad knee injury, chipped in with some goals as well.
Conte was able to bring out the best aspects in these guys, so were these guys good players all along playing in a very bad system last year, or was it the work of Conte?
I would tend to believe that it was a little bit of both. The players, on their own, might not posess the talent that everyone hopes for, but in the right system, they all turned out to be good to very very good players.
the man deserves some credit here. Yeah, he made some mistakes, but all sporting directors make them. Its a very imperfect science. Elia, for example, was the type of player that was brought in for a 4-2-4 system. That was the system that was going to be used. Conte changed the system, Elia couldn't adapt. Plain and simple.
But every single sporting director makes mistakes. If they didn't, then every team would be great.
