I don't think that anybody has a problem with reducing wage expenditure. It's the players we signed that cause the outrage, especially since we have to pay a premium for them considering they arrived from rival clubs. And another thing to consider is that if we do want to buy these loaned players, like Pepe and Qualiarella, we will have to offer them larger contracts than they already have. Just the fact that we are Juve makes their supposed value rise. So you have to look at it from all the angles.
To me, I'd rather sign a young talent and tie him down to a meager contract instead of buying a Quag who already has inflated wages for his supposed skill level, which isn't even that great.
Whether or not they (quag, pepe etc) get a significant wage increase will depend on their performance and marotta's negotiations. Its easier to negotiate a slight increase of wage than a decrease of even slighter wage. We can hope they don't get significantly more than what their making.
I too would rather see young gens, but after our recent fumbles, I think we aren't able to make that gamble. Our management sees our signings as a safer bet to getting a CL spot. Look who we've bought, above avg Serie A players, who is seen as CL spot worthy. Lets not kid ourselves, this isn't a scudetto challenging team on paper.
That's what they basically said. We are building a good base of players so that in the following years we can add a lot of quality, coming out of a few bad years like we did in the 90's. So no, I'm not misunderstanding this at all.
I am one of those who thinks this way, we are rebuilding the base.
The initial problem was the change of formation from Ranieri's 4-4-2 which was quite successful and needed few polishing to Ferara's 4-3-2-1/ diamond 4-4-2. We didn't have the players. If you want to buy few quality players as apposed to many abv average, we needed to maintain similar formation and style of play.
The 4-4-2 system was lost, now we're trying to rebuild a team for 4-4-2. Squad roster wise and strategically. So under these circumstances, I do understand our approach although I don't approve of each player than came in.
I am worried given our terrible performance against Bari, but we'll have to see a few more games to gel before predicting whether this team is really capable of top four or not.
Of course being a Juve fan, I am optimistic.
