Givet close to Juventus Monday 31 July, 2006

Gael Givet is close to signing for Juventus, with reports suggesting that he will ask Monaco for a transfer in the next few days.
The 24-year-old French international could be the starting point for the new Juventus and was specifically requested by Coach Didier Deschamps, who worked with the player in the principality.
Juventus are in need for a new defender after the sales of Lilian Thuram, Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluca Zambrotta and are willing to offer £2.8m for Givet.
The Bianconeri may also include the Jonathan Zebina or Igor Tudor in part exchange.
“I have had several contacts with Juve, as well as with other clubs,” said Givet.
“Deschamps knows me very well and we get on fine, so I consider this an interesting opportunity.
“On Monday I will meet with the club to understand the situation and see what can be done.”
Juventus are also about to present their offer for Newcastle defender Jean-Alain Boumsong, who confirmed on his website that he had contacts with the Bianconeri.
Boumsong is also very highly considered by Deschamps, whose plan is to rebuild Juve’s defence around him and Givet, but the 27-year-old Frenchman is also sought by Marseille and Monaco.
Newcastle’s demand for Boumsong is not yet known, but Juventus could consider offering some players to sweeten the deal.
