I personaly agree with Sunshine about the crack down on off topicness and the negative effect it has created. I had a feeling it would come to this, and thats why I was against Martins policies.
IMO the forum was better before, with all the "off topic chit chat" than it is now, with all this negativity.
Yes, you cannot discount that factor. However, as others have already replied, there is plenty of room for chit chat in parts of the board, there is a problem when that is carried into the debate threads, and those IMO have improved considerably since we made off topic out to be a problem. I'm pleased with that development and I think a lot of people appreciate the increased activity in debates.

I disagree. They were not insulted the very instant they popped their heads in. They earned those insults!
We are not a community that insults and hates other fans by heart. I've seen and had many good talks with fans of other clubs.
Is it cuz they're Milan fans? No, again there's more Milan fans than these two on the board. Some knows how to behave themselfs, but our two new friends speak like they're superior, try to patronize you every chance they get, hurl insults in every direction and look for fights cuz they're bored.
If the community have failed in anything, it would be to let these visitors go on and on like this for such a long time.
I know Martin and I don't share the same opinion on forum policy, but I don't see the point in welcoming and trying to get along with people who are only looking for fights.
If this is a community that dictates on how to react when faced with a troublemaker, I don't wanna be a part of it.
It doesn't matter if they're Milan fans, Juve fans or curling fans.
The point is that in my ideal forum situation, the members can deal with anyone, no matter the person's inclination. I'm well aware that the Milan fans started out very wrong and that's exactly why it's so important to react appropriately. We only ban people when we think they are in clear violation of the rules and persist with that behavior. I don't think it's right to ban someone because they are annoying to others because then I think the responsibility falls on those others to be able to deal with that person.
Why doesn't Incubo get banned? Because he took to his senses, his behavior has improved. And I think we should be able to handle him, for better or for worse, because that says something about us. If we can't handle a person who is clearly trying to split us and egg us on, that's our failure. And that's why I said I'm disappointed in those well respected forum members who haven't been able to deal with this very well. Let me put it this way: what would you say if a moderator got carried away like that and engaged in the flame war? A moderator is supposed to be objective, right? That means they can't allow their feelings to get the better of them and fall to this level. Because if they did, that would make them a poor moderator. And that's the reason for my appeal to the users here to stay in their skin, if you have to hold back, then do it, but it benefits the community and I also think it benefits you as a human being in the long run, if you can handle a person like that.
But in the long run, the situation can also benefit the community in another sense. When Paul and Ian were both "new" members, they had some differences that came to surface. At one point Paul said he was leaving because he didn't feel respected and there was no point in staying with a person like that. But we didn't ban Ian, we didn't think he was here purely to insult people, we thought he had another agenda. We tried to separate them a little, told them to ignore each other and in the long run it wasn't a bad call. Show me one person who doesn't think Ian should be here. And what's more, in this recent incident with Incubo, Ian was one of few of those involved to show good judgement and lead the way.
So being in this forum sometimes *is* an excercise in dealing with "bad" people.
