Rooney should not be in the list...you're forgetting the Drog
Why not? He has been brilliant this season, and as much as he's overrated by the English press he is underrated by most other people. He has worked hard all season, he has been United's most creative outlet along with Carrick and he has been one of their most consistent players.

I don't think you can really nominate strikers for the top5 if they haven't had a full season to play. I mean Torres with 14? Noone in the EPL even cracked 20, that's not a strong season for strikers.
In normal cases you're right. But Torres was brilliant when he has played this season, and then again, was Messi not nominated for best player of the year in 2008 even though he missed almost half that year to injury?

Torres was brilliant, and like i said he would have been higher up that list if he had played more games.

Drogba found his form and was given a chance to play regularly only from February when Hiddink replaced Scolari. He scored "only" 15 goals in all competitions, with only 5 of them scored in the league.
I believe Fred was talking about this season only and this season Drogba's record is very poor compared to Eto'o, Zlatan, Forlan etc.

If we talk about their overall quality then Drogba would've been in Fred's top 5 without a doubt.
I am talking about this season only, i thought i made that clear. The reason he hasn't made the top 5 is not only due to his goal scoring record(Rooney doesn't have much of a record to boast about either) but also his performances up until Hiddink came have been piss poor. Unlike Rooney, who despite not scoring much goals has performed well for most of the season and was one of Uniteds best players.

That's different. Those awards are cumulative, much as people like to claim otherwise. Basically if you're Messi you can afford to miss half a season because your reputation makes up for it. Same thing with Ballon d'Or. If you get beaten one year like Ronaldo lost to Kaka etc there's a very strong expectation that it's your turn the next season, even if you have a lesser season than the one before. The perception is "he's earned it".

I doubt that was the case with Messi, as if your memory serves you right you will remember that he hasn't played a full season before this one. Yet he was nominated for best player in 2008, which was before he had ever had an injury free season.

But sometimes, you're so much better than everyone else, that you deserve to be nominated despite not playing as much as everyone else.

Just that in Ronaldo's case he indeed earned it in 2008.
Won the CL, won the EPL, scored more than 30 goals in 2008 (from January till 31st December) etc.

Martin was talking about players that get nominated for individual accolades despite missing a big portion of the season.

Agreed, don't get how he is underrated. Deserves credit for the season he has had.

Would put him in my top 5 attacking mids

Udinese make Zuniga bid
Saturday 13 June, 2009
Siena have confirmed that Udinese made an offer for sought-after defender Juan Camilo Zuniga.

“I worked at Udine for many years, so I happened to meet with [President Giampaolo] Pozzo and we talked about a few things,” Siena director of sport Manuel Gerolin commented.

“It is true that Udinese have asked us about Zuniga and we also discussed Paolucci, who is co-owned with Juventus.”

Zuniga has also been linked with the top clubs such as Milan, Inter, Juventus, Napoli and Roma.

The Colombian is still only 23, but made a strong impact in his debut Serie A season and earned comparison with legendary Brazilian right-back Marcos Cafu.

“Many Italian and Spanish clubs are interested in Zuniga,” added agent Riccardo Calleri.

“The clubs I spoke to in January included Juventus, Genoa and Lazio.”

He'd be a good move for Udinese, they've been forced to play Zapata as a rightback at times. And even when their fullbacks are fit, neither Ferronetti nor Lukovic are really up to standard.

I believe Udinese will use Juventus to get Zuniga.

As you can see Paolucci is mentioned as part of the potential deal. Paolucci is co-owned by us and Udinese and he can't go to Siena if both Juve and Udinese don't allow it.
Since Siena are something like Juve's B team and we are very interested in D'Agostino, i guess Juve will be in the middle of Zuniga's transfer to Udinese.

Later, if Zuniga keeps showing good form, maybe Juve will have an option to buy him from Udinese or something like that.

Based on this season's performances how would you guys classify the top 5 strikers in Europe?

This seems interesting, because of the recent arguments on Eto'o, Zlatan, Villa, Torres and Forlan.

For me this is my classification of the top strikers in the world based on this season's performances

1) Zlatan Ibrahimovic: He has been absolutely stunning this year, imo his best season to date. He has been toying with Serie A's defenders for fun this year and has scored a number of stunning goals. Based on this seasons performances, i don't see much competition for him for his #1 spot. If it weren't for his failings in the CL he would have even been a contender for best player in the world.

2) Eto'o: He has been deadly this year and has scored 31 league goals, which is always an achievment. He has been wasteful at times, but overall he's had a brilliant season

3) Villa: He has held Valencia all by himself this year. And scoring the amount of goals he has scored with his team in the state that they are is one heck of an achievement. Very close between him and Eto'o imo.

4) Torres: He has been out for most of the season but when he's played he has been fantastic. 14 goals out of 20 starts i believe, in a season where it has been extremely difficult to score goals for strikers. Add to that he was fantastic in the big games against the likes of Arsenal, Man Utd, Real Madrid and Chelsea, scoring against all those clubs this year. If he hadn't been injured for most of the season he would have been higher up the list for me. World class striker, no two ways about it.

5) Wayne Rooney: He hasn't scored much goals, but he has been vital to Man Utd's season. Playing out of position multiple times and excelling wherever he's asked to play. He isn't an out and out striker. But he's a hard worker, a creative outlet and one of United's most consistent players this year.
Didnt Henry also play out of his position?

Didnt Anelka top the epl?

Rooney deserves props, for sure, but not in a top 5 striker count down, seriously, he aint a striker. Ronaldo is more deserving to be in this list, Rooney plays like an AM, for sure, Kaka also plays more of a goalgetter then this guy.

Pretty much :agree: on that list.

Ibra should move out of Inter i don't care where he will end up but i really hope i won't see he's face ever again with Inter.

Camelface and maicon out of Inter and we'll have a serious shot for the league title next season
