of course not, they don't have contracts, but they do get payed. a fixed amount per every group game + bonuses for draw or win, improved amount for knock-out games + bonuses for draw or win, and god only knows how much for winning the tournament. it's a one month competition, they get payed very, very much. but i get what you meant.

point is that even the president of france forgave the kid and you people are still talking about it

consider this, if the list was based on the world cup than he should be there; he led a team to the finals, doing most of the work himself. if its for the whole year than i cant comment on it, since i do not follow the spanish league

that's the point, but its not a world cup shortlist award, its a world player of the year award

We all know that FIFA World player award sucks, it was discussed even earlier, winning Golden Ball is something you can be proud of, but this is just pure crap.

I didn´t expect Buffon winning it in the first place.

which is exactly why people shouldnt get surprised when zidane, ronaldinho and henry make the list.

Why do I have the feeling that you are just arguing for the sake of arguing?

Zidane has been playing football for what? 15 years? more? Doubt that Matrix was the first player to curse him. I am sure he got that 1000's of times!

Pressure? He has been under pressure numerous times...WC98, Euro 2000, and CL Finals, apart from the day in day out pressure football players have to live with.

What he did is just downright stupid, and shouldn't be given any excuses IMO.

Totally outrageous that Zidane is on the list. He played about 3 good games in the whole year and then disgraced himself in front of the whole world.

Absolute joke he is in before Buffon who has been ace the whole year and is undoubtedly the best keeper in the world.

there's a pro zidane lobby at FIFA,and a very strong one too.i dont think he deserved the award in 2003 either, and nominating him this time ahead of the likes of pirlo, buffon and henry is silly.

FIFA awards has always been biased and unfair,
maube this time they will get it right though,
Ronaldinho had a so and so season, Henry the same,
ZZ is there because he has many friends with suits, i ve always said that, they do honour him but i dont think they will dare to award him in the end,
they already did too many ridiculous decisions in the near past...

Bullshit. Zidane experienced the pressure for over a decade and it wasn't his first World Cup final either. Besides that, the 21 other players all got taunted in the game as well. Malouda faked a penalty and Materazzi never went berserk. If you get a red in the World Cup final you can't be named the tournament's best player (though that's exactly what happened) AND world player of the year. This is insane.

Zidane basically single-handedly carried France through the World Cup... that must count for something.

And to be honest, most of the time the Italian defense kept the ball away from Buffon, apart from a couple games. So I'm not exactly sure why people think the exclusion of Buffon is such a surprise..
