Zidane may not be a good role model for what he did, but certainly he is a great footballer! Better than any Italian player on the pitch in the finals.

Actually Malouda's incident was less obvious, his body was in motion which makes the swing of his arm more natural (regardless whether it was intentional or not), but while De Rossi was just moving vertically up, and suddenly lashed out an elbow quickly...It was pretty obvious to me that it was some what intentional, perhaps he was just used to doing such things in the serie A or something..

I think Zidane will get punished(like it matters) regardless the outcome of the investigation, the investigation is there to see whether Matrix deserved a punishment as well or not.

In all fairness to Fifa, they have been on a "Lets kick racism out of football" campaign for a long time. This is one of those momments when Fifa is put on the spot about their campaign, it would be wrong of them IMO that rumours are speculting of there bieng racists remarks on the field in a WC Final and not do a thing about it!

I understand your comparisons to Totti, and I don't know what sparked that fire, but there was no rumours of any racist remarks.
I think even you can understand that people have their limits to verbal abuse.

About Zidane's legendary status? It will be even more so as this incident became the highlight of the 2006 WC finals...a spectacular way to go...although not in a positive way....

“The winner of that award is not decided by FIFA, but by an international commission of journalists.

“Saying that, FIFA’s executive committee has the power and the need to intervene when dealing with comportments which go against the ethics of sport.

“But we have to wait for the time being. Being innocent until being proved guilty is a sacred principle.”

Zidane shocked the footballing community with his gesture, one which Blatter has admitted was rather unexpected.

“It hurt me,” he continued. “I’ve known Zidane for many years. Seeing him react like that was bad, for himself and for fair play.

“He was so distraught after the game that when the French officials told him to go and collect his medal, he replied by stating that he didn’t deserve a medal.”

The Italian newspaper also used the interview to ask Blatter why he wasn’t part of the ceremony in which the Azzurri were handed the World Cup trophy.

“I was convinced that the honour should have gone to my Vice-President and UEFA President Lennart Johansson,” he explained.

true there is a double standard, but there r reasons why ppl r making a big deal of this incident.
1- this is zidane, a legend.
2-this is his final game in proffesional football
3-it is a final of the world cup
4-the manner in which the incident occurred as zidane walked away then walked back to give marco the horns.
5-marco materazzi doesnt have the best reputation, he gave every player around him a hard time, not necessarily with his football skills.

actually the racist thing is very interesting, it was just explained to me. There was a lip reader who saw the video before the incident.And she read that matrix said something racist to zidane, although she doesnt know italian which was the only communication method between the two players.She was working for BBC, so they said something abt it and the news travelled very fast.Although they "could" be very wrong.
