Vieri on form in final test
Friday 11 June, 2004

Christian Vieri bagged a hat-trick in the last friendly test before Italy’s opening Euro 2004 clash with Denmark.

The Inter striker hit the back of the net three times in a 5-0 victory over the Belenenses youth team in Lisbon.

Alessandro Del Piero, who showed continual improvement over the last few days, and Mauro German Camoranesi scored the other goals.

Giovanni Trapattoni again fielded the eleven players who will take on Denmark on Monday evening.

The friendly match lasted for 75 minutes with a 4-2-3-1 system that will be used in the tournament, the only change being Gianluigi Buffon playing in goal for the Portuguese club side.

In the second encounter, we saw all the other Italy players who won’t be there from the start, and Antonio Cassano again pushed for a place with a hat-trick in their 6-2 thrashing of the local side. Marco Materazzi, Stefano Fiore and Marco Di Vaio were also on target.

Meanwhile, there was bad news for the Danes ahead of the opening match, as Jesper Gronkjaer will not take part in Monday’s encounter following the tragic death of his mother from cancer.

Italy 5-0 Belenenses

Scorers: Vieri (3), Del Piero, Camoranesi

Italy: Toldo; Panucci, Nesta, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Perrotta, Zanetti; Camoranesi, Totti, Del Piero; Vieri

It's good that Vieri is in form

FORZA AZZURRI

It's also good that DP is finding his feet again. I hope he can reproduce the form shown in practise on Monday.

Why is it so hard to believe that Incubo wants Del Piero to perform well for his country? I believe him

DUDE...I also don't have to prove anything to you and don't have to prove my passion and pride as an Italian. I have stated this since I arrived here..look back. So take your bullshite somewhere else...if anything you wouldn't know as a Non-Italian.
If I hoped he wouldn't score why have I said in discussions I think that he is better than Nedved??

How the fvck was DP supposed to live up to his hype in 02 when he played all of 90 minutes? And imo Totti's WC2002 was far from satisfactory, but does he get bashed like Alex does? No, of course not.
The hype has existed since 98 in case you were born yesterday. By the time 2002 rolled around he was lucky they even brought him.
Totti does not get bashed because Totti is not as advertised as Del Piero....sometimes the JUVE PR machine comes back to smack them in the face.

Andy whats your point? I was stating an opinion.
And if you actually read my post (past) i said an ON FORM Del Piero..more over, its become clear that the Golden Ball has lost much prestige...is that to say that Sammer was a better defender than Baresi or Maldini in his career because he won the Golden ball and they didn't???

Okay, I didn't read that. I thought that you meant Alex was better than Nedved last season, which would make zero sense. But the Golden Ball doesn't go to some half-kaka player you know, maybe except for the Sammer case. And remember the criticism FIFA got for not including Nedved in the top three candidates for World Player of the year? Players like Zidane and Ronaldo did not have much success that season, but Pavel was still left out. Maybe that says something about the way that Award is conducted.

    From channel4:

Meanwhile, Nedved has rushed to the aid of his Juventus teammate Alessandro Del Piero following his complaints about constant comparisons with Francesco Totti.

“Totti is lucky,” noted Nedved, “because the press is always on his side. Del Piero doesn’t fare nearly so well and you lot take any opportunity to criticise him. I’ve played alongside Alex and know too well he is a great player.”

Thats True.... Media are always on Totti Sides , while they wait Alex just do to SMALL mistake to criticise him... damnnn !

The hype surrounding Del Piero that started up in 98 was deserved because he was easily the most talented man in Italy. Unfortunately he didn't live up to expectations in the World Cup that same year. I'm not trying to make excuses for him, but he did get injured in the CL final against Madrid that year, you know. In 2000 he only disappointed in the final, but his bashing on that occasion was deserved as he missed two easy chances. However, I don't see how you can say that Ale didn't turn up in three f***ing tournaments because he only played 90 minutes in total and scored a goal in 02.

"By the time 2002 rolled around he was lucky they even brought him."

How is that? Since when do you pick a team based on how a player has performed in other competitions? He was good in the qualifiers and had a very good season that year.

Way to go Trap. Nice idea :D

Anyway, Vieri seem to be in the form of his life. He is constantly scoring goals (hat-tricks) in friendly matches and looks mentally strong. Let's hope he explodes in Portugal and leads Italy to the final.
