Barça Lacking Will To Win?
The recent disastrous showing at Montjuïc has breathed fresh air over the glowing embers of discontent with the current FC Barcelona. Has Barça simply had its fill of trophies and is starting to suffer from over-feeding of the lavish praise heaped on Rijkaard’s team?
An ex-Blaugrana legend, Johan Cruyff, the self same who played for the Catalan club and coached them to European Cup glory in 1992 at Wembley, seems to think so. In his Monday column for Barcelona broadsheet ‘La Vanguardia’, he outlined his ideas.
“Barça has become conformist”, his headline ran. Cruyff went on the point out that the team suffers in the Liga that seems less of a challenge these days. His central point is that the double-tap of Liga triumphs reduces the domestic league to an almost humdrum status.
“As soon as the Germans [Werder Bremen] were overcome the team has fallen drastically into a conformist phase that destroys all of the side’s previous virtues”, Cruyff pointed out. “You only have to look at the football offered by the team since the 5th of December.”
He also saw the Liga as only being as open as it has become over recent rounds due to Barcelona’s own shortcomings rather than the strength of the rivals faced. "Barça have allowed this. What’s more, Madrid are right on Barça’s tail despite not playing well.”
His core allegation is that if the Blaugranas had managed to win against Atlético, Getafe and Espanyol, the Liga would have been reduced to a two-horse race with Sevilla. "Am I being too ambitious?”, he asks, anticipating many readers’ disagreement.
“Maybe I am, but the thing is that despite the injuries, the suspensions and the overload of matches this squad should be capable of performing a lot better tan it has been over the last five weeks”, Cruyff accused.
He did, however, see positive in the negative. “Slaps across the face like the one against Espanyol are never a bad thing if they serve to point out deficiencies that can be corrected”, he said, going on to warn against an all-out panic as dangerous as not heeding the warnings.
"Panic? Completely the opposite. Now it’s time to see what’s going on and how to change it and the only panic should be of doing nothing at all or overreacting”, he pointed out, also warning against fans viewing Eto'o and Messi’s returns as nothing short of messianic.
“It’s a legitimate desire to want to see both players back as soon as possible but there’s the side-effect tat they could be saddled with far too much responsibility", advised Cruyff “for as good as they are, they need to be able to reappear with less work to do.”
The ex-Coach was noticeably easy on Rijkaard, whose own furious impotence at seeing his side unable to put into practice what they’d been learning was crystal clear as he punched through the dugout side window. This is a verdict shared by a large segment of Barça fans.
A poll conducted by Barcelona-based sports daily ‘Sport’ found that most Barcelona fans found fault in the players’ attitude, letting the tactician off lightly from the spreading stain of Barça’s recent unimpressive showings.
No less than 31% found the team’s lack of that hardcore, basic will to win as an immediate emergency that propelled the team forward is lacking. They see the players not putting in the same intense performances, circulating the ball sluggishly and losing possession too easily.
One of the symptoms quoted by readers in Spain was that Barça used to press the rival team from way back close to the goal with strikers hassling the opponent to either rob the ball and launch a close-range counter-attack or destroy an embryonic enemy move. Not now.
The other potential causative factors were injuries – 25% – the fact that the stars haven’t been shining as bright as they should considering the mount of ‘fuel’ deposited in their bank accounts – 18% – bad physical shape – 15% – and Rijkaard’s influence only being blamed by 10%.
The plague of injuries that has robbed Rijkaard of the ability to field the same team with the sort of consistency that the team needs was seen as, together with the lack of drive, responsible for most of the ills.
These fans highlight the importance of playing with an almost intuitive understanding of team-mates. The fact that the constant enforced changes have driven Rijkaard to chop and change means that the team has seen its habitual strength diluted as a team is more than 11 individuals.
With Eto’o and Messi not there to share the limelight, Deco and Ronaldinho have been overloaded with the responsibility for churning out even better and more consistent performances. This is also extended to a certain disapproval of the new arrivals.
Thuram and Zambrotta haven’t produced the sort of work that made them stars at Juventus and Gudjohnsen is seen as being too unreliable as a goalgetter. This means the numbers 10 and 20 are under the microscope and any cracks in their play are magnified mercilessly.
It’s debatable as to whether there’s one root cause for the current malaise that’s bookended Barça’s winter break, the answer probably being found in a blend of all of the above elements.
The real point isn’t, however, in a premature post-mortem but in a bit of preventative medicine that will avoid the problem spreading through the season. Cruyff was specific: “It’s not about inventing or revolutionising anything.”
“It’s just about trying to recover your own sense of style, the team’s particular identity on the pitch that is reflected in four elements: Intensity, pressure, positional play and a high speed of ball circulation.”
