Toon fans finding their way here to defend Sir Alan? :D I've seen it all.

He was obviously a top striker, and England have obviously had plenty of good individuals over the years, but I really do wonder what a lot of these players would have done in Serie A around the turn of the century. Would have been interesting to see. I think the midfielders in particular would have done very well.

One thing on Shearer - he wouldn't have had the protection he had back in the PL. I saw that guy live many times and he was a horrible, dirty striker who the refs let get away with murder.
Shearer was an absolute beast. Clinical as fuck and as strong as an ox.

He's a much better player than he is coach or pundit though.

I thought Origi wasn't half bad. Only watched him in the World Cup tho
Played a great World Cup, but disappeared after and had a very disappointing season.

He's a pretty young guy right (19 or 20)? So inconsistency is probably expected.
Yeah, but to be fair I've only seen him play well for the national team and a handful of games for Lille last season. To produce absolutely nothing during an entire season is more than just being inconsistent. Perhaps he wasn't motivated, because he knew he was going to Liverpool?

Yeah and there was an issue during the Jan window where we wanted to bring him on early and he wanted to come, but Lille wasn't cooperative. That was right around his poor stretch for the season. Still 8 goals and 3 assists would have made him one of our top scorers.

Aw fuck.

He was clinical for a mid-table side. I think his clubs won 1 PL title, and came runner-up once in his entire career. He's much the same as a Di Natale. Scored a bunch of goals playing for a second rate side, but never took the challenge and pressure of playing for a big team. It's really hard to say how well these type of players would have done had they played for a big team that didn't play entirely for their strengths... Same thing with Francesco dickface Totti.
