of course they had a different approach for 2 years...they were rebuilding the team...the messed up part has been that we have made signings that have turned out bad, not that we did not get the right kind of players

The problem is when you spend little or get a player for free usually they arent going to be great players. Do you think its random that Amauri is great but we got Melberg for free? NO you get what you pay for and defensively our signings are cheap and worthless!!

Defensively we can get better, but first we have to do the following. 1) No more dario. 2)Legrottaglie should be send to the nearest church to preach on sunday instead of playing football. 3) grygera should be donated to nearest charity

If we were gonna buy a new CB, we wouldn't have got Cannavaro. He's just a short term solution. And it's very unlikely that Mellberg, Lergo and obviously Chiellini are leaving. So that makes four CBs plus probably Ariaudo. So we should expect a new RB at least.

They must ve brazy by just adding Canna and thats it. I know this board is capable of doing that but im trying to have some confidence in them.

Dispatch someone if necessary leggro and bring a hella good defender.

Leggrotagglie has his days... but since his first season with us around 2004, he looked like those players who will simply not be world class...and so far it has been proven...even when he has been better.

That 2004 campaign of his was disastrous. He still has that stupid tendency of commiting handballs(or whateevr the name it is called).

Leggro has given us two solid seasons, he is one of our best defenders, the only problem is that he has reach his peak and there's only downside to his game now.

buying an expensive CB does not equate to a defence that will never concede goals...the DF require all 3-4 guys working together...if you notice, most of the goals that we concede is due to A) breaking the offside trap and B) swift counter-attacks...and these situations usually mean a collective failure, not just one guy

Very good point. The games when the entire team (especially the defense) worked together as unit, we barely conceded any goals.

These last few months, I'd say the problem was mainly due to concentration (and possibly motivation) rather than incapable defenders.
Off course this doesn't mean that we don't have some defenders of questionable quality.

and you're forgetting fatigue as well...we played something like 15 pre-season matches, and our DF was made up basically the same 4-5 players...must have taken a toll on them

I'm not sure if fatigue was a big problem though. All of our defenders have been injured at some point in the season, so it's not as if they played more games than other teams' defenders.
The only defender who at some point looked really tired was Molinaro, which is understandable. If I'm not mistaken he played the most out of all our defenders.

I do agree that, from a defensive point of view, Molinaro was really good this season. Perhaps even more consistent than Leggro.

Indeed Moli looked better, even when Chiellini or Sissoko wasnt there.
But Legro was very exposed when those two werent available.
Naturally, his mistakes became more apparent and his performance was affected the most!

There is little to debate here, its logical... Rating the performance is one thing and the quality, another thing...

On another note, the media claim that Dagostino deal is almost complete.
I hope that we will soon start to offload Tiago, Almiron, Zebina and maybe Mellberg too and invest that cash on our defense!

the first 2 you suggested need to be offloaded/sold/loaned/given to charity/killed...the latter 2, well I think they are still solid backup at the very least
