Blog: David’s direction
With David Trezeguet likely to be sold by Juventus, Giovanni Spinella suggests where they shouldn’t do business for the Frenchman
Every summer sees the return of a familiar rumour – David Trezeguet leaving Juventus. Like an old married couple, the Frenchman and La Vecchia Signora publicly argue and bicker so much that is seems the only possible solution can be a break, only for peace to be made and the spat patched up.
Back in 2004, Trezeguet looked on the verge of going to Barcelona until Fabio Capello stepped in and insisted the striker stay. Two years later, amidst the chaos of the Calciopoli relegation, Trezeguet was once more considered to be on the way out until Juve’s management made the last-minute call of holding on to him – admittedly to the Frenchman’s disappointment.
In the last game of that Serie B campaign, David made very public gestures on the pitch indicating he still wanted to leave until Jean-Claude Blanc and Claudio Ranieri managed to convince him to stay.
This summer, yet again, Trezeguet looks on the way out. Assuming that this is the year he finally does leave, Juventus should carefully consider where to sell this player.
Despite his recent injuries, Trezeguet is easily one of the deadliest finishers of his generation and is the Old Lady’s top foreign scorer. A player of this calibre cannot be simply shipped off and especially not to Juve’s rivals.
Rumours abound of Roma’s interest, while Milan and Inter have also been linked to the player. Whereas the Giallorossi have a small transfer budget this season – compounded by their failure to qualify for the Champions’ League – making such a move unlikely, Milan are flush with Real Madrid’s Kaka money and Inter have daddy Massimo Moratti bank-rolling them.
Crucially, the two Milanese sides will be playing top-flight European football next season, and that is something Trezeguet wants to hopefully still win a place in the 2010 French national side.
Juventus have budgetary constraints of their own and this management has made its own mistakes in the haste to recover funds – the sale of Adrian Mutu coming to mind. However, the Bianconeri have made some important signings so far with the stated intention of mounting a serious title challenge. But all those efforts could come to nothing if they end up re-enforcing their rivals.
With that in mind, if the Bianconeri’s senior management have decided to finally cut their Frenchman adrift, they should ensure that Trezeguet’s destination be far from the stadiums of Serie A.
David’s loss will be painful for Juve’s supporters, there is no need to compound that pain with anger should he return to Turin wearing a Milanese jersey.
