Omicron ‘Pretty Mild’ So Far, South African Health Expert Says

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...-mild-so-far-south-african-health-expert-says

  • Professor Schoub says there’s no real rise in hospitalizations
  • Large number of mutations in omicron destabilizes virus
Symptoms linked to the omicron coronavirus variant have been “pretty mild” so far, according to a Covid-19 adviser to the South Africa government.

While South Africa, which first identified the new variant, currently has 3,220 people with the coronavirus infection overall, there’s been no real uptick in hospitalizations, Barry Schoub, chairman of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Vaccines, told Sky News on Sunday.

“The cases that have occurred so far have all been mild cases, mild-to-moderate cases and that’s a good sign,” said Schoub, adding that it was still early days and nothing was certain yet.

South Africa has been hit with a number of travel bans from the U.K. and other nations, after its scientists found the mutated variant last week. Since then, a growing number of European countries, along with Australia, have also identified people infected with the variant.

The large number of mutations found in the omicron variant appears to destabilize the virus, which might make it less “fit” than the dominant delta strain, said Schoub.

“In a way, hopefully it won’t displace delta because delta we know responds very well to the vaccine,” he said.

Only about a third of South Africans are vaccinated.
Sounds positive so far. Like I said though, this has probably already been circulating for a while. Hopefully more positive news begins to come in though, especially in time for me to get paid Tuesday and throw a little more money into SPY :agree: :xfingers:

Day 7 of this shit. Headache and brain fog has improved significantly, I've regained probably 80% of taste and smell, and I'm no longer having to sleep for 10 hours a day. Still have a little bit of a cough, probably because of drainage and the goddamn cold/dry air mass. Hopefully back to normal the next couple days.

Only good thing about this is my liver is probably very thankful for me missing out on the usual holiday drinking. Can't wait to saddle up again. :wine:

Bummer. As long as you get your taste for wine back

Sucky symptom ride though. This is your first encounter with the beast, right?

Yes indeed, first time. Hopefully the last. Sometimes my colds can linger for a while, and I'm hoping it doesn't happen with this. It's already been one long, hellish week.

Funny thing -- I didn't start regaining taste and smell until I started taking shots of apple cider vinegar again. Not sure if it was a coincidence, but that definitely seemed to open up some senses.
