So after +4 months of a 'hard lockdown' there are talks of us (finally) re-opening the country (The NL) again: allowing outdoor drinking and dining and ending the evening curfew. You'll need to have a negative test prior to visiting an outdoor drinking venue though.

Reason behind it? We can't force people to stay inside anymore when the summer arrives. People go to the parks and we can't control that. Although the numbers by the Health Officiers show no reason to ease measures: there are more beds occupied in the IC and we have an average of 8K positive tests. Which is pretty similar to the numbers in the first and second wave

Eventhough I'm close to borderline depressed by now, being able to get drunk somewhere else from home will make a big difference. Probably need it more than I think and also stopping my cautiousness once it opens up

At the very same time I'm skeptical about our future, it's just a matter of time until these Brazilian variants becomes more dominant in our country (right now it's 1,5% of all cases) and having no real strategy vaccines + this virus rotating surely means a fourth wave and another lockdown anytime soon.

Really feel like our time of enjoying an outdoor pub is limited until a fourth wave. Might as well enjoy it as much as possible while I can.

India is having a nightmarish 2nd wave of COVID infections over the last 10 days. Some states are worse hit than others, but it's so bad that pretty much every step involved in dealing with the crisis, starting from testing centres, ambulances, oxygen supplies, hospital beds, medications like Remdesivir, and even crematoriums are reaching their tipping point, leading to a collapse in the system. All this cos we got a govt that's move focused on winning elections, holding onto power and being arrogant control-freaks who won't take any suggestions from anyone regarding how to run things. People all over Twitter and Instagram are pleading for help and some kind folks are helping out when the govt should've got their act together months ago instead of believing that we've already beaten covid.

Oh, did I mention how we've run out of vaccines? My mom is supposed to get her 2nd dose of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine and there is no stock anywhere. Our govt decided to export the first batch of vaccines to foreign countries for PR, even boasting just a few weeks ago that they've exported more vaccines to other countries than given to our own. If you thought Brazil or the US's handling of this crisis was bad, look at India. We're gonna have a deadly month ahead of us.

PS: All official numbers are mere minimums cos lots of states are massively under-reporting cases and deaths. They are literally covering up crematoriums so that the media doesn't show how many bodies are being cremated. Situation is FUBAR!

I heard. Sorry to hear, mate. Man, so many places take their foot off the gas. I think you also have to resist the overly reductionist idea that if only we did a, b, and c, everything would be fine. Yes, I do believe lockdowns work for the most part (at least at getting case rates down - but not eradicating the disease). And yes, all the other social behaviors with masks and social distancing help.

But this is a weird moral disease: governments are too quick to take credit when things go well, and scapegoats for single issues or people are readily sought after when things do not go well. It's much more complicated than any of that. Hell, the human immune system is a complete multi-layered mystery for that matter.

I was feeling a bit cocky that Portugal had this under control relative to our neighbors. Then Christmas and January came and we lead the world for two weeks in COVID infections and deaths per capita. It comes around. I worry about how things are opening up a little too casually now, as I could see us going back under in two months.

But even for countries that Hoovered up all the vaccines (a reference to a brand of vacuum cleaner), I have a heavy bet that the Peltzman effect is going to humble them harshly eventually. Too many variants going around, too much travel across borders, and too many places in the world with minimal vaccine penetration. You cannot build a wall for this thing.

Now 80% of the world has DO NOT TRAVEL Level 4 ratings just like Iraq, Sudan, Yemen, and Somalia all due to covid.

Time to live on the wild side.

How's your mom doing? Wishing her a speedy recovery.
Sorry I missed this post. Thanks for asking, though.

Today she went for a checkup after 5 days. She went to scan lungs and see blood results. She got results, doctors basically didn't say anything bar having 94% saturation, and sent her home and told her to come for another checkup in 5 days. When I saw results it said that her pneumonia looks slightly worse than 5 days ago. I was shocked when I saw that because my mom looks and feels like 50% better. She's out of her bed, eats more and has more energy. I was expecting it to be better surely, so I was like WTF. She was told to continue with same meds plus another 2 vitamins. As for the saturation, that is also quite bad. Some hospitals take people who have 94 and under. But this hospital she went to, they take people to hospitals when it it's 91-92, then it's worrying. So I went to my ex boss to take that thing that measures saturation, I knew they had it and I didn't want to spend 50e on nothing basically. So she measured now and it's like 93-95, changes. So yeah... I have a headache and I'm kinda tired. I did recover totally but I don't have old form when I walk 20km easily. Today I walked like 10 and I'm tired.

I've had pneumonia like that before when I was young, she still should be taking it easy. Hopefully her feeling better is a sign that she's starting to get better though. Hopefully you get back to your old form soon too :xfingers:

Hang in there bro! Also, don't worry about oxygen saturation, 93-95 is fine and not so alarming, still, she has to be careful and watch herself.

I'm like this since the 2nd of March, buried the grandfather in the process.
I did fine (lost 7kg less in a week, and a lot of nerves, patience, money also but that's not important but people should know that it's really expensive also), no symptoms but two other members had pneumonia and another is a diabetic (was most worried about that patient).

From March till today my father got 5 lung scans (the 5th was two hours ago) (+ one tomography). The first scan when we tested positive was OK, then, after a week, the scan was bad and the blood results. His saturation was always fine but then dropped a lot so he was hospitalized for about 10 days I think. During his stay he was scanned again (3rd time) and his lungs we're OK for a 74 year old man and the condition. The saturation got back above 92 so he was let at home. A week ago we did a scan once again (4th cause the doctor said so) and blood tests, not good again even thou his saturation is 94 and 94+ (sometimes 99). Because of the virus other things got complicated also, so I'm literally in a hospital every fucking day since March, even slept there with a family member. The COVID centers are real hell, let me tell you. It's like a really fucked up psychological Bergman horror movie. 100% of the anti-masker-coronavirusdoesntexist-vaccine dumb fucks will cry like little babies if they see what I have seen and experienced.

It's a really fucked up disease.
I advise you to buy or land a saturation device immediately because the situation can change in matter of hours when you don't even expect it.

Hang in there bro! Also, don't worry about oxygen saturation, 93-95 is fine and not so alarming, still, she has to be careful and watch herself.
For the elderly 85+ it's fine but than again it should be 91, 92+ for faster and better recovery. Not enough oxygen = organ failure and we do not want that.

It makes sense to open outdoor terraces at least though. They can make sure bars and restaurants enforce distancing, which is a lot more than you can say for parks. I mean on sunny days, the scenes in Museumplein and Vondelpark are crazy hahaha! and whenever the Geemente closes them, people just head over to the smaller parks.

Yeah, those numbers are insane, I just don't see how it stops at this point. Even lowering those numbers would take at least 6 months. By that time Indian variant will roam all around Europe.
