I heard. Sorry to hear, mate. Man, so many places take their foot off the gas. I think you also have to resist the overly reductionist idea that if only we did a, b, and c, everything would be fine. Yes, I do believe lockdowns work for the most part (at least at getting case rates down - but not eradicating the disease). And yes, all the other social behaviors with masks and social distancing help.
But this is a weird moral disease: governments are too quick to take credit when things go well, and scapegoats for single issues or people are readily sought after when things do not go well. It's much more complicated than any of that. Hell, the human immune system is a complete multi-layered mystery for that matter.
I was feeling a bit cocky that Portugal had this under control relative to our neighbors. Then Christmas and January came and we lead the world for two weeks in COVID infections and deaths per capita. It comes around. I worry about how things are opening up a little too casually now, as I could see us going back under in two months.
But even for countries that Hoovered up all the vaccines (a reference to a brand of vacuum cleaner), I have a heavy bet that the Peltzman effect is going to humble them harshly eventually. Too many variants going around, too much travel across borders, and too many places in the world with minimal vaccine penetration. You cannot build a wall for this thing.
