I understand Seven's perspective but I think its unusually naive for him. What would happen if we took no precautions and attempt to ride this out? if western governments announced the coronavirus was here, prepare for mass death of the vulnerable but the rest need to keep working to prevent economic collapse because we ran the systems and based off data we concluded that staying open is the most sensible approach? that we need to let the vulnerable die and preserve our future? maybe its accepted but then what happens a few weeks into that scenario when the healthcare system becomes overwhelmed, a bunch of us get sick, your grandparents die, ignorance is allowed to spread like a second virus through social media?

Red state boomers might be willing to die for the economy but, imo, most westerners are not even remotely psychologically prepared for a pandemic. They would panic and the insuing panic would create far worse damage than the current shutdown.

Even from the coldest, sacrifice the weak to preserve the herd perspective, the shutdown makes sense because we arent the chinese or boomers. If you think Susan who needs an hour of goat yoga after becky's passive aggressive comment at morning coffee is going to rise to the occassion that her grandparents did in 1940 you're high off your ass.

Most of current western society is not capable of making that sacrifice because they haven't experienced anything like this in their lives and if pushed into it there is a high chance would only react in a manner that makes the situation even worse.

the West has to shutdown. I can understand the argument that we should be tougher/ more resilient but that had to happen years before the actual crisis. at this point you gotta play the cards youve been dealt.

mitigation of deaths is paramount to a society that so much values individual over collective and, in case of usa, has such a large amount of population that have zero sense of social responsibility

I have seen him speak many times, guy's brilliant and he explains in detail every point with solid arguments, he definitely flouts convention, understatement i know, but he is pretty convincing at the same time, you should see some of the names that endorse him, and like you said that excentricity if anything might just get others moving.

what is the deal with the antibodies test? Is that actually a reliable way to determine if someone is safe to be out? They keep talking about it on the news as a means of allowing people back to work but there have already been confirmed cases of reinfection.

does having antibodies make it less likely to become infected (and able to spread) or does it simply give your immune system better chance to fight off early but you can still spread virus to others?

Antibodies means you already suffered the virus so almost everyone think it should make you inmune

Diretor from one of our nursing homes had no measures regarding corona, there were visits like nothing is happening, and now there are 138 cases there. Its all old folks (plus four nurses), I guess majority is going to die...

@JCK what's the situation in Sweden? I read how your hospitals got some instructions on how to handle it and how older people in some cases won't be placed on ICU and how certain groups can already be disconnected from the ICU as of now? Is that true? Seems like it's just letting people die.

The hospitals are ready and every hospital has a tent outside for testing. All operations that could be postponed were postponed and infection departments are made to be with staff on the hour. I don't know where did you get your news from.

Sweden has not have a lock down yet,, maybe that's why people are spreading rumours about the country.
