I paid attention to his covering of our defense and it was superb most of the time. Something that's just not part of Pirlo's features.

as a DM he makes Juventus a better defensive force against counter attacks and in some ways, a better offensive as well.

I found Pogba holding the ball and dictating the mid a lot of times and that can only happen when Pirlo is not on the pitch.

Pirlo's got the creativity, vision and his long balls on his side though. He's the one we'd use against those defenses that just can't be penetrated.

Most important of all, it's good to know we can function without a true regista.

Obviously Marchisio is going to offer more defensively than Pirlo in that role.

What that game didn't really show, though, was how big the gap in passing ability is between Pirlo and Marchisio.

Because Samp played an open game, it was easy for Juve to move the ball quickly and relatively simple passes were getting Juve into very good situations.

I'll be interested to see Marchisio play than role in a game where Juve are facing the sort of deep, compact, numerous defence that they face at home most of the time.

But isn't that the luxury of having both Marchisio and Pirlo? Marchisio is fantastic in that deep role in open games where sides actually attack Juve and don't give Pirlo space to control the match from. Whereas, when we face those teams that park the bus, Pirlo is essential for picking them apart. I'd like to see more of Pirlo and Marchisio rotating depending on opponent. Plus, the rest will do Pirlo good.

Pirlo doesn't really pick anyone apart anymore though. I'd rather just get the ball to Pogba, Vidal, Llorente or Tevez as often and as quickly as possible instead of hoping the guy standing at the half way line can drum up something.
