But the point is, did they bounce back this season and seize the initiative? Yes.

And thats the point I'm trying to make. This is our first year back in a few years, you have to expect bumps along the way. Saying it's "embarrassing" if we're knocked out of a tough group isnt true IMO. If it's a continual failure in the CL groups, then sure.
But United shouldn't be able to get off years, especially not in an easy group like that. Sure, it's great for them that they bounced back this season, but that doesn't excuse last year if you ask me.

I don't think it will be a disaster if we're not getting through, we were seeded 3rd after all. However, I will still be very disappointed since I think we should be able to get through pretty much every group. It's clearly not good enough if we won't make it through the group, but it won't be a catastrophe.

Top 8 in terms of what? Stature, our current level of play, history, fans?

As a club right now, I'd put Dortmund above us. We're at least a year or two behind them IMO.
Historically, and currently. I wouldn't put Dortmund above us, even now. Their defense has been suspect, even leaky at times. I think, if we were to encounter them, we would conquer them over 2 legs ;)

Same here mate. I'll be fucking gutted. But I won't feel embarrassed. That's all I'm saying.

Regardless, when we sign a proper striker next season and have the benefit of a year's experience with the core of this team in the CL, my hopes will be much higher in this competition.

Historically, definitely yes. But they have a CL win over us (cunts) and we beat them in the UEFA Cup in 93/94.

It would be a fantastic game no matter what. But I think they just shade us at the moment. They are really strong.

Well, I will probably feel embarrassed since it's likely because of our draw against Nordsjælland that we won't get through. :D

Blips. We were arrogant in that game and paid the price. Experience...or lack thereof ;)

I really do hope we reach the knockouts though. I would like to play Barcelona, hopefully our players can injure their players. That would be ever so enjoyable.

We owe them for what they did to us in 97. An undefeated campaign right up until the final :sigh:

I agree with Bianconero_AUS all the way in this discussion. The 80s and 90s are "long gone", and we have everything to prove in this competition, a competition which by the way is incredibly difficult this year. Notice how many good teams there actually are. Teams such as Dortmund, Shakhtar, PSG, Malaga, Anderlecht etc. We're "just another team" in this competition as it now stands, with everything to prove. Top 8 in Europe, my ass. We come from 10 draws in a row in Europe, only beating Nordsjælland along the way, and even before that we had a reputation for choking big time in Europe. We're building something for the future. It would be a disappointment to be eliminated, but definitely not embarrassing. If it's Chelsea and Shakhtar that go through, it won't come as a shock to anyone but the most deluded of juventini and Serie-A fans.

But you're just another "ambition-less" fan :andyandbarcelona: etc.

Anyway, its bedtime for this surly, Australian Juventino. I shall converse with y'all tomorrow. Night.
