I would say Shaktar are probably better than most of the EPL clubs in the competiton. Certainly better than Arsenal and City.

Disastrous :howler:
Yes, disastrous, from both a financial perspective, and in terms of prestige and our ability to attract better players. Moreover, we could use the extra coefficient points. I fail to see how what I said is even remotely untrue or amusing.

Shakhtar are not better than City ;)

Bianconero_Aus clearly have no idea of what success in Champions League means. To him it's all fine and dandy, we are rebuilding after all - heck we haven't even got any players with experience from Champions League unlike the likes of Schalke and Malaga, who were expected to go thru.

Shakhtar would destroy City.

Fuck co efficient points. And whether we make it to the second round or not will have no bearing on what players we attract when Serie A isnt an attractive league anymore. And because we aren't owned by Russian or Arab oil barons...

Was it a disaster when Man U and Borussia Dortmund (and City?) didnt qualify for the knockouts last season?

I guess members of the society have been influenced by their lord and master's lack of ambition and modest expectations :D

Schalke have no experience in the CL? Wah?

Yes we are rebuilding. Clearly dont have the team/squad and proper mentality (yet) to compete in Europe.

Not entirely true. Perhaps a deeper run will romanticize the club; you can never know these things. I'm not saying getting Cavani or Falcao, but guys like Isco or Willian.

It was definitely a disaster for United that they didn't qualify, at least on a sporting level. City are new to the game, and don't have the heritage or pedigree that we possess, and Dortmund have never been and never will be on our level (you should compare them to Roma or Lazio perhaps).

ROFL. Dortmund are a massive club and are growing year by year. Man United didnt qualify last year and after a "rebuilding" off season now lead the EPL and CL groups. Hardly a disaster.

City are an embarrassment because they spent nearly a billion dollars and will fail to qualify to the knockouts for the second year running. Now that's embarrassing.

Of course Man Utd was a disaster in CL last season. They couldn't get through a group of Benfica, Basel and Cluj. There's no way you can argue with that imo.

Since when? Historically, they aren't on our level. United were careless and complacent last year, underestimating their opponents, and as a result failed to qualify. As for City, losing out to a hungry and motivated Napoli, in addition to the always dangerous Bayern Munich in their maiden season is no shame. However, this season, they have been embarrassing, considering that they've struggled to even get points off Ajax (managing a draw in 2 encounters).

I rate Juventus as a top 8 side in Europe (we are far ahead of everyone else in Italy), and as such, elimination in the group stages would be deemed unacceptable and inexcusable.

But the point is, did they bounce back this season and seize the initiative? Yes.

And thats the point I'm trying to make. This is our first year back in a few years, you have to expect bumps along the way. Saying it's "embarrassing" if we're knocked out of a tough group isnt true IMO. If it's a continual failure in the CL groups, then sure have at it. Some people need to realise we are building something here. We're not a complete team yet though.

It's a failure if we fail to qualify, by definition. An embarrassment might be considered an exaggeration by some, but it most definitely would be a shock and a massive disappointment.

Sure. I can agree with that. But "embarassing"...nah. If we lost every game in the group (or drew every game like in Europa League) than fair enough.
