i do agree we played THE WORST game of the season so far... however, we still got chelsea in trouble and got away with only 1 goal -created in a moment of nervousness & confusion at the start of the game- at Stamford Bridge. I don't see Chelsea as the big thing. Also, it was our first time in that scenario, how do u think chelski will feel in italy? They will know what a bianconero tifosi is! forza juve, and they better start training on how to pass~!
We certainly could have been better, but worst game of the season? Not even close - we've been MUCH worse than we were today. The reality is that we have a quality shot to advance - that was really all I was looking to achieve at the bridge. Losing is never fun, but our team can hold their heads high tonight. 1-0 isn't too bad a score line at all.

We outplayed Chelsea in the second half, and that should give the lads confidence for the rematch at home. Now it's time to regroup, and prepare for Napoli, which is a pretty huge match in its own right. The Scudetto will be difficult, but it's not over yet!! FORZA JUVE!!

Let's face it, we played like a small-time team against a better and bigger team. Shit at the beginning, crap throughout. They were clearly the stronger team, and while we had some good moments, we couldn't pass and couldn't keep possession. I don't care what the stats say, we looked very mediocre. Chelsea were always more dangerous, and their movement was far superior throughout the match. Our midfield lacks quality, and it's as simple as that. Camo is good, but he simply can't do it all by himself. Nedved tries very hard, but he's simply too old. Sissoko does a job, but his lack of intelligence means he simply has NO part in a genuine top-class midfield. That said, we need him right now. Chiellini is good, we all know that, but NO ONE ELSE is good enough. It's that simple. We have some great players, but they're either too old to carry the team through a whole season, or they're not playing. Our "Great Saviour" Giovinco never plays and isn't developing. Simple as that. We have a great goalkeeper, and some top-quality forwards. However, that's not enough. We can't control games against Palermo, much less against teams like Manu, Chelsea, Inter, etc. When we play well, we're pretty good, but our base-line simply isn't good enough for what we need. We have match-winners, but we don't have players that can control games. It's like the difference between Gerrard and Alonso. One player can win games single-handedly, while the other player makes the WHOLE team play far better. Without quality in midfield, we'll never be good enough to win the Champions League or the Scudetto. simple as that. Chelsea have that quality, and it showed.

I liked what I saw from Juve apart from the first 15-20 minutes. I'm still confident will can go through. We didnt back down, and dominated the second half. Its always the same people complaining about something. Its not over til its over, stop crying already.

Despite whatever positive, or shall I say idiotic thoughts some of you might have about this team progressing, Chelsea showed us today all that this team lacks, and why we won't go any further in this tournament, or put any silverware in the cabinet come May

Face facts first, after the sad comedy I watched today, I have no doubts in my mind that Chelsea WILL score the away goal that knocks us out of this tournament. You can take that to the bank and cash it. I saw a bunch of stumbling, bumbling bunch of clowns in Juve jerseys who ran into each other, panicked every time Chelsea attacked, gave up the ball at every possible opportunity, couldnt string 2 passes together, and all in all played worse than an U-12 girls team would against Chelsea (no offense to the girlies under 12 !!)

Out-muscled, out-hustled, out-worked, out-skilled, out-passed, etc, etc, etc..... Chelsea showed us today that this team isnt good enough to be in the CL, and we need a major overhaul of players, coach, and management if we are ever going to be serious about this challenge

Molinaro was completely exposed today for his lack of defensive skill

Marchionni cannot take corner kicks, and passes the ball to the opposition at every opportunity

Legro is not better than he was in the 2003-04 season, and showed it today, as well as showing that he cant dribble the ball without losing it (with no one on him, mind you)

Tiago gave the ball away too many times, and showed that he has no heart after the collision with Chellini (I thought he was gonna cry)

Neddy has the heart of a 22 year old, but the body of a 40 year old

Camo looks poor this season, and is hurt again

DP and Amauri got little service, and did nothing with the chances they had

Sissoko is big and strong, but has no football mind or quality

RUINeri was outsmarted by a better coach....someone here mentioned in an earlier post about Ranieri's tactics, for the life of me, would someone tell me what they are ?? I am still trying to figure out what his gameplan is...I dont think he even knows !! All he knows is a 4-4-2 formation, but has no fucking clue what to do with it. Did we have a gameplan today ?? If we did, would someone tell me what it was ?? This idiot shouldnt be the coach of such a prestigious team as ours, we used to be feared....now, we are being laughed at. WTF

We will have to suffer through the rest of the season, and hope to get a CL spot (which isnt guaranteed with the way we've been playing), and then we need to get rid of RUINeri, the 3 stooges in management, Molinaro, Marchionni, Grygera, Tiago, put Legro in a permanent bench position (only to play in the Coppa), and bring some players, coach and management that have quality, and want to win.

Until we do this, we will keep seeing disappointment, and posts like mine

Neddy has the heart of a 22 year old, but the body of a 40 year old
Thats a bit harsh, Neddy body is equal his age if not a bit less, I don't see many midfielders of his age doing his type of work rate.

But I agree with you with the rest.

I can't see Ranieri's tactics, I can't see Ranieri's preperation. That was some of the worst passing I have seen in CL. Our passing game yesterday belongs in Serie B.

I can't believe how nervous our players were. We should have approached this game mentally with more precaution, our players seemed shocked from the start.

I think only Del Piero and Amauri had a fair game, but there was no passing from midfield let along service.

Abysmal. We should have been better prepared for this, if we were going to get a result we had to have good performances from Chiellini, and Camoranesi. Capitano's set-pieces are something we normally rely on I don't know what happened yesterday, they weren't as accurate. Another bad decision was Chiellini being a playmaker at the back, and just randomly launching it long. Amauri had a great game, he was very very good against Terry and Alex in the air, but was forced wide due to the lack of creativity; hes supposed to be in the box finishing moves off not on the flanks. Nedved really worked his socks off, covered the most distance too bad he couldn't get the normal bite in his shots as he normally does when on the edge of the box. And that Trez. Oh lawd. I would have put anything on Trez cleanly connecting with that volley, it was made for Davii. I don't know its just that, on the left side we have Molinaro and 36 y/o Nedved, on the right we had Mellberg and Marchionni for the second half, I don't know if we can qualify with this quality. Our main/only source of creativity in Camoranesi is again injured, who knows if he'll even play in the second leg...

i wont blame Ranieri's choice of players
he has very limit choice and the squad today have proved that could play very good in series A, the problem is that our players' performance are not constant, sometimes very good but sometimes crap....

Iaquinta should play in the 2nd leg. We could use his pace and strength and aerial ability. Actually if we are to play with 3 forwards, I'd choose Iaquinta ahead of Trez for this match.

It depends on what chelsea will do. If they are going to pack the midfield, then our static midfield might be forced to boot the ball more, which means I'd rather have a strong fast forward like Iaquinta chasing after those balls than a quiet Trez.

I didn't think we were that bad at all. We started terribly and they bossed the first 20 minutes but after that we were the better team. No two ways about that. It's going to be extremely difficult in the second leg because they'll probably set out to defend but I still believe we can beat them. We showed that we're capable of that today.

We did deserve at least one goal at Stamford Bridge. As I would love us to be the best team in the CL, the facts are we arent, even if we happen to win the 2nd leg and knock Chelsea out i cannot see us beating Manchester Utd, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Inter, if we did play them.

Hey all, long-time lurker here, after watching our abysmal performance yesterday I feel obliged to get some stuff off my chest.

At the beginning we couldn't get our rhythm going at all. There are a few different reasons why:

1 - Its common in the CL when teams from different leagues play one another that the game starts slow, simply because they aren't used to one another's style of play. This one I am OK with.

2 - It was obvious Ranieri didn't prepare as well as he should have. He knew we were playing Chelsea for months and this was the end product of the preparation? Pathetic if you ask me. To be fair Hiddink threw in a wrinkle and used Drogba and Anelka together for the first time last weekend, but that's not an excuse.

3 -Chelsea came out looking confident with crisp passing and aggressive wing play. That has been our downfall all season long. Our fullbacks simply aren't good enough to be left alone, for example, with an aggressive Kalou. We can be thankful Anelka isn't that comfortable on the left yet or it could have been much worse.

4 - No unit cohesion whatsoever. The defense looked timid, and the midfielders were incredibly nervous and seemed to "defer" to their Chelsea counterparts. You could say they lacked confidence. DP and Amauri looked frustrated and I don't blame them, they got almost no touches until near half time.

As for the goal, I don't think you can single out one or two players for the blame... from the first whistle you could tell it was coming. The defense was struggling to cope with all the pressure put on them by the Chelsea midfield and it was only a matter of time before someone was forced into a mistake. Kalou slipped a perfect pass through the back line and Drogba is good enough to take advantage of those.

The biggest problem, IMO, is our Serie B-like passing, especially on the build-up. Look, I love Nedved and Camo but they are getting up there in age and aren't the players they once were. Watch Nedved when he's pushing the ball into the attacking third. His decision making is pretty poor. He needs to be more decisive with the timing of his passes. Camo is better but since his injury he is just not the same, especially with his crosses. And for all Sissoko's strengths, he cannot be trusted to organize an attack.

We pose no threat with the long ball. I am not comfortable with Molinaro or Mellberg/Grygera's abilities to make the cross-pitch pass to the opposite wing. Ever wonder why the opposing fullbacks show up on those wing attacks so often? Its because we don't hold them accountable for these passes.

In all honesty, losing 1-0 away is not the end of the world, but from our performance yesterday I think its safe to say a lot of work must be done if we are to advance.

I slept only 3 hours before watching this game, as here in Melbourne it was a 645am kick off. It wasn't what I hoped for, but the performance was not exactly surprising, given our form since christmas, in which time I haven't seen us play like a team good enough to hold onto second in Serie A, let alone progress through the champions league knockout phase...

Player Ratings:

Buffon:
Couldn't do much about the goal. Handled everything else as is expected of a keeper of his class. 8,10
Molinaro
An embarrassment. Both for himself and for the club. I cannot remember a player who has managed to hold down a first team berth at Juve, in 18 years of supporting the club, who I despise as much as Molinaro. He can't tackle. He has poor pace, a lack of positional intelligence. His crossing is useless. And last night, he made Kalou look world class. That tells a story in itself. And it is largely Molinaro's fault that we were under the kosh for the entire first 15 minutes. Such is the magnitude of his ineptitude, i would rather see Chiellini on the left, Legro, Mellberg and Grygera taking up the other defensive positions. That is, of course, unless De Ceglie is fit and available. Whatever happens during the summer break, Molinaro must not only be replaced, but sold, given away on a free, or hung. 2,10

Chiellini
He clearly isn't yet match fit. Didn't pass well, lacked his usual ferocious pace and spirit. Improved defensively in the second period, but his distribution was shocking. A rare poor showing earns him a 6,10.

Legro
Perhaps at fault for the goal, and lost too many aerial battles to earn a decent rating. He can play better. Its strange how his form is so affected by the form of Chiellini. He appears only able to go as high in form as his central defensive partner. Still, like Giorgio, he improved after the goal, restricting Drogba and Anelka to only a couple of half chances. 6,10.

Mellberg
A galactico in comparison to his opposite number on the left flank, but still, not fast enough to repel Anelka, who several times, could have caused more damage after passing the Swede. I prefer Grygera in this position. 6,10.

Momo
Not the inspirational, NONE SHALL PASS, performance I was expecting from our prime destroyer. He tackled well, and managed to keep Lampard away from goal for most the match, which was an accomplishment of sorts. Still, his distribution, and general control of the ball were poor. Liverpool supporters will be laughing, no doubt. But he is young, and I remain hopeful that he can become one of the greatest anchormen in the world game. Not great, but near satisfactory. 6,10.

Tiago
One gorgeous through ball to DP which almost resulted in a goal. But other than that, only noteworthy for his ability to pass the ball in a straight line, which many of his team-mates failed to do. He likes to keep it simple, but its obvious to the opposition, that the ball is going through him when Momo or centre backs bring it out of defence. 6,10.

Camo

He is world class crosser of the ball, whose crossing last night was terrible. He needs replacing in the summer, more so than Nedved, because he is injured for 80% of the season. Also, behind him in the pecking order in a player who challenges Molinaro for worst player of the season, Marchionni. a disappointing 5,10.

Nedved
worked hard, passed the ball better than everyone around him bar Tiago. One decent shot near the end, his other efforts tame enough for an 8 year old disabled girl to save. Perhaps without the injuries to Camo and Tiago, we would have seen Giovinco appear. Cheeky handball was the highlight of his game for me...or rather, his chuckle after been penalized. 6,10.

Del Piero

Tidy-ish on the ball, but muscled out of everything except the one chance created by Tiago in the first half. Other than his ability to take free kicks, he was another contender, alongside Nedved, for replacement by Giovinco. The service he received wasn't great but still, I expect more from our captain. 6,10.

Amauri
Difficult to judge as he wasn't found often, with anything less than two or three players to beat, by his team-mates. Well marshaled by Terry and Alex, but without decent deliveries into the box, his game was stifled. 6,10

SUBS

Marchionni
Had a decent pop with his left boot which wasn't too far off target. Put a couple of useful balls into the area, but his general play was useless. Its a danger giving him the ball when he is surrounded by opposing players, because he wants to give it straight back. Also, his passing was unforgivable. An expected 5,10.

Marchisio
While he misplaced a couple of passes, his general play was robust, assertive and reliable. I thought he offered a greater balance in midfield than the man he replaced and he can be a threat shooting from long range. Not at his best, but that is likely due to a lack of match fitness. a respectable 7,10.

Trezeguet
His first contribution was a disgusting pass to put Chelsea on the attack, but before his 6 minutes of playing time expired, he found himself reaching the ball first, on the volley, in the box, though the finish was shameful. The fact that he got into that position shows why we have missed him so dearly these last 5 months. I was just happy to see him playing. Obviously in desperate need of time to regain match sharpness, but if he remains injury free over the next two weeks, he deserves at least 45 minutes in the return leg. He never works hard, that has never been his style, but he knows where to be in the box, and is a far easier target man to find, than Amauri. An encouraging 7,10.

Conclusion

While we could have equalized, it is also true that Chelsea could and should have extended their lead. The first 15 minutes of the game must have made the hearts of every juve supporter witnessing the spectacle, sink lower than they have done for three years, such was the excitement prior to this match. We were appalling until Drogba scored, rather fortuitously, because Kalou's pass wasn't intended for anyone in particular, yet Chelsea deserved their lead, like they deserved their victory overall. While we managed to weather the storm, assert ourselves on the game as the game progressed, in the latter stages our passing went to the dogs, with the team unable to string more than two passes together at a time. This is not was anyone expects of Juventus. And it must be addressed before the return leg in a fortnight.

Much of the lack of fluidity of our game can be blamed on the fitness of players. With Camo, Chiellini, Tiago and Trezeguet all working towards gaining much needed match sharpness. None of them have been consistently fit for the last few months, and this shows.

Molinaro excepted, if we can gain momentum over the next few games before we face chelsea again, we will have a fighting chance of going through. Their away form in europe is not exactly impressive, though neither is our own form presently, home or away, domestically or in europe. Still, we are fortunate to be trailing by only one goal. And we remain capable of going through.

Although we were outplayed for much of the game, the result was decided by one slip-up by our central defensive pairing. On the opposite end of the pitch, Alex and Terry were almost flawless. Credit also to Lampard and Mikel, who made progress through the middle impossible for Tiago, other than on the one occasion he managed to thread through to Del Piero.

Ranieri Rating:
With the players available, he chose the strongest team. It wasn't his fault that we started like a bunch of amateurs. That was down to the players. His forced substitutions made sense, and I was pleased that he gave Trezeguet a run-out, which could have resulted in a goal. 7,10.
