Italian teams had a record season in terms of coefficient in 2014-15 while English teams had a terrible year. This season, the 2014/15 results are no longer taken into consideration in the rankings, which is why the gap between Italy and England is now massive.

This year’s results haven’t had much of an impact so far.

This year’s results haven’t had much of an impact so far.
Even without season 14/15, at the start of last season the difference between EPL and Serie A from seasons 15/16, 16/17 and 17/18 was "only" 6 points and Italy was 3rd, fighting for 2nd.
Now, the difference is 17 points with tendency to become higher. Of course, it has to do with the great results of the EPL, but also with the average results of serie A teams last year and even this year. We're at the beginning of the season, and the Italians already lost a team in Europe (Torino), are close to losing another one (Atalanta) and they're losing points where they shouldn't.
