Against Spain/Barcelona you can't look to control possession, or control the game. Defend deep, in numbers, swarm the midfield, and hit them on the counter. It also helps to have pacey players in the attacking phase of your game, and a clinical finisher.

Flexible/adaptable formations also help, and players that are willing to run/sacrifice themselves for the team over 90+ minutes are imperative as well.

It's the Fifa rankings. They are a joke. Portugal, I can understand, but England  :shifty: :andyandbarcelona:

Apparently, quality of opponents doesn't matter. Hence, if Italy play Germany, Russia, Spain, England, and Argentina for example, and end up with 2 wins, 2 draws, and a loss, they'll get less points than America when they play against Barbados, Antigua, Bermuda, Cape Verde, and Mexico (4 wins and a loss).

I thought strength of teams count but that friendlies are weighted high which is why Italy do so bad in rankings. They don't take them seriously and it costs them big points.

Either way, Italy have never done well in these ranking systems.

This.

He did marvelous the whole tourney, but yesterday, Prandelli derped, and hard.

He should have looked for a way to not use chiellini, who was literally burned. But he insisted on chiellini and the wrong formation, and he paid dearly.
The same could have been said about Chiellini for the Germany match, Prandelli made a major international final and he had to use his best players. Tough to get Motta injured as well, I thought there could have been a bit of a fight back towards the end of the match, oh well. Easy to criticise him now for something beyond his control.

Prandelli went for an all or nothing approach and lost out, that's what happens sometimes. He's done a fantastic job with this bunch and is clearly changing a lot about the way Italy is perceived by other nations. One of my friends who couldn't stand the way Italy played in previous tournaments actually admitted he enjoyed this side.
