I wanted to open a thread about this.

Basically for me it's like this, automatic is for pussies, manual is for man men. :D

Seriously, I just drove an automatic for the first time and it sooooooo boring. It's like you're playing a video-game with a steering wheel. Throttle-Break-Throttle-Break-Turn-Throttle-Break.

I can't see the fun it, manual is so much more interesting and makes for a better overall driving experience IMO.

I have a question: how do you not destroy your brakes to the point they start to melt and smoke if you're going down a steep mountain with automatic gears?

My manual gearbox is my everything. It's why I'm a reasonably mature and responsible driver.

I don't know TBH, going uphill is no joy also. Last summer I drove in a automatic and the drive way to my house is a steep downhill/uphill. Everytime we were going out I felt the engine is gonna burst because of the pressure, it was fighting to find the right gear and all you could do is put some ear-plugs in and hope it doesn't explode.

Lord that sounds like hell.

I do love the automatic for giving us the DAF Backward Races tho  Check it:

Variomatic is the stepless, fully automatic transmission of the passenger car manufacturer DAF. The variomatic was introduced by DAF in the Netherlands in 1958, introducing the automatic gear box to the Dutch public for the first time. The variomatic was introduced on a lower priced version of the DAF 600, making it accessible to the common people. The system, using a drive belt and two pulleys, had one unexpected side-effect: it caused the car to be able to drive as fast backwards as it could forwards. This lead to the very famous annual Backward DAF Races.

Automatic (DUH!). Why would I bother with switching that thing million times.
So you can be in control of your car fully and most importantly so you can take care of your engine at all times. Really, after a few months switching gears becomes second nature.

They don't do these anymore

But it was the best day of the year. They had a regular race, a backward race and a caravan race. The track always included ramps and holes and what not. Priceless

They were actually driving backwards with caravans attached?
OMG, I can imagine the joy. :D

I know I know, but it's like jerking off when you have a nimphomanic girlfriend :D

Oh come on Elv, I know you like to use your right hand often. :D
Actually I tend to change hands often for a better effect :D

automatic is the best for heavens sake with manual ialways tend to concentrate on switching ears rather than cocentrating on the road. to be honest i know when i have to change a gear up wards i,e from first to second and so on but when it comes to going downwards i never really understood when to do that.

automatic is not for pussies vlatko and i never felt like it doesnt give u control over the car i think its easier and alot more fun. besides now in new cars they have semi automatic gear box i e u can control which gear u r on so u never lose the beauty of accelrating and controling yr car without the need of a clutch.

If you lose the engine, you're too late :D

So if you drive an automatic a lot: how do you handle mountains?

I was joking with the pussies part man.

Don't get offended but if that's the case than you were never a confident driver to begin with. By leaving a manual and going for a automatic you just accepted defeat and chose the easy way out. All you needed is practice with the stick, like I said it becomes second nature very quickly.

there is sth called Ds ( its similar to the L gear) it basically does lowers the rpm yet gives the car soo much torque and grip to go up a mountain is that what u were referring too erik???. as for the triptronic thing i honestly never tried it but observing a friend of mine who drives a megane he shifts to d1 and then d2 if i am not mistakened.

:disagree: You are a lousy driver then, Ahmed. :p I can switch gears blindfolded and in the same time pleasing my girlfriend in the back-seat. :D

I remember during my second or third driving class (meaning the second or third time I had ever driven a car cause it's impossible to practise with your parents car in this country: densely populated + lots of cops) I was at a traffic light and I had forgotten to put the gear back in 1, it was still on 4.

So the light hit green, I hit the gas and we start moving veeeeery slowly. So I floor the gas pedal but still no good.

So we're moving across an intersection at 5 km/h, slowly going on 10, there's other people honking at me, I tell my instructor "Dude I think your car broke down"

"You're in 4th, Einstein" :howler:
