I don't give a toss if the midfield allows someone to chip a straight ball forward into the box, because I don't consider it something that should be remotely difficult for a defence to deal with.

Crosses from wide areas are a different matter because they can be very difficult to deal with.
Well I do give a toss because that cross led to the goal.

You understand that the position the cross for Genoa's goal came from was considerably more dangerous than where Ledesma's ball for Lazio's goal came from?
I agree with this personally. I'm of the belief that there are certain areas of the field where you get tight to stop crosses coming in. The area Ledesma pinged the ball in from was not one of them for me. If you close down tight in areas like that consistently then you would be out on your feet by about 60 minutes.

Why even bother having people defending in the penalty area then?
:sergio: Because people make mistakes. Defenders are the last line of defence, but it doesn't make them the only defence. Every aspect of that goal needs to be defended against, including the cross and the shot on goal. You are only blaming Peluso and Giaccherini for failing to defend the shot. I'm simply stating that someone should've defended the cross. That man was Vidal.

Come on, Red! This is basic stuff.

And in pressing that area, there is also every chance you will leave a more dangerous area open.

So who should have been marking Mauri instead of Vidal?

He would have been left free if Vidal had been out with Ledesma.

If Vidal had closed down Ledesma quick enough, then Mauri couldn't have even received the ball because ledesma would've been forced to pass backwards or sideways. Even if he did get the pass, Bonucci or Peluso, maybe even Padoin could've closed him down.

Neither do you, who apparently thinks it's ok to risk conceding a goal by letting such crosses be put into our penalty area with such ease and precision. :boh:
Remind me where I said it was ok?

Vidal should have tried a bit harder to stop that ball from reaching our penalty box but you'd expect the defense to stop such a ball 9 times out of 10. Oh and if you had played football, you'd know that it ain't that easy to stop a cross, especially when you're exhausted at the end of a game.

You're being too harsh against him, way too harsh.

It's not that easy to stop a cross when that player is in the middle of the park. You can lunge in and get walked around in literally any direction.

On the wings, you can lunge in and have protection from the byline. You can eliminate options and force players to cross into you.

If you are trying to stop crosses from 40 yards out in the middle of the park, you will fail 9 times out of 10 anyway. The best you can do is get walked around.
