I agree with this personally. I'm of the belief that there are certain areas of the field where you get tight to stop crosses coming in. The area Ledesma pinged the ball in from was not one of them for me. If you close down tight in areas like that consistently then you would be out on your feet by about 60 minutes.

So who should have been marking Mauri instead of Vidal?

He would have been left free if Vidal had been out with Ledesma.

If Vidal had closed down Ledesma quick enough, then Mauri couldn't have even received the ball because ledesma would've been forced to pass backwards or sideways. Even if he did get the pass, Bonucci or Peluso, maybe even Padoin could've closed him down.

Vidal should have tried a bit harder to stop that ball from reaching our penalty box but you'd expect the defense to stop such a ball 9 times out of 10. Oh and if you had played football, you'd know that it ain't that easy to stop a cross, especially when you're exhausted at the end of a game.

On the wings, you can lunge in and have protection from the byline. You can eliminate options and force players to cross into you.

If you are trying to stop crosses from 40 yards out in the middle of the park, you will fail 9 times out of 10 anyway. The best you can do is get walked around.
