Everyone who doesn't see that it was a foul is ready for consulting an eye specialist. :)
Oh ffs how many times do I need to say it? That would be called a foul anywhere else on the pitch except for when the referee knows that he has no choice but to send off a man in the biggest match of the season for something that lacked the usual cynicism or foul play of most red card offences

gray: if you got a big fattypack like ferdinand running up from behind, you know he's going for your body, would you keep the ball at your feet or try to out run him?
That's one of the essences of solid defense: physical superiority. Rio was strong enough to outmuscle Freddy without tugging him down. I haven't had the chance to look at more replays (which I'll definitely do), but from what I saw the referee made the right (non)call

Van Nistelrooy pleads guilty

Man. United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has pleaded guilty to a FA charge of serious foul play during Sunday's match against Arsenal, the BBC reported Tuesday. Van Nistelrooy caught Arsenal defender Ashley Cole with his studs in United's 2-0 win at Old Trafford.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy has decided to accept the FA's charge of misconduct relating to the incident with Ashley Cole," United said in a statement on their website.

"Ruud has accepted the automatic penalty of a three-match suspension and Manchester United fully supports Ruud's decision."

The FA said on its website that the Dutch international's suspension would start immediately, ruling him out of Tuesday's League Cup tie at Crewe Alexandra.

He will also miss Saturday's Premier League match at Portsmouth and the following weekend's derby game against Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy said he accepted responsibility for the incident but added that he had not intended to hurt Cole.

"Throughout my 10-year career I believe my disciplinary record is very good, not only for Manchester United but at all clubs," Van Nistelrooy said.

"I accept the charge brought by the FA and I take full responsibility.

"There was no deliberate intent to harm Ashley Cole and I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to him."

The FA is still investigating two other incidents relating to Sunday's match.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger criticised referee Mike Riley, who controversially awarded United a penalty, in his post-match news conference, and there were also reports of Arsenal players throwing food at United manager Alex Ferguson in the tunnel after the game.

Last season's equivalent match at Old Trafford also caused huge controversy.

Arsenal were fined and four of their players banned for pushing Van Nistelrooy after he missed a penalty in the dying minutes of the 0-0 draw. Two United players were also fined for their part in the fracas.

They can't do that
Yes they can. It's happened on countless occasions when a referee has performed far below the standard expected from a professional, they can get suspended for a certain number of matches

unfortunately, many of my associates compare juve as the italian Manure....which is argueble....

but utd do get pens mor eoftne than most, and get a shi load of extra tim ewhen they want.....(anyone see the blackburn game??)

Im not a arsenal fan, but i was saddened to hear of their defeat, especially as the gooner fans will never be able to rememebr it without a manure fan reminding them who stopped them.

It isn't right to complaint about the mistakes of a referee? :D Just a question: So why do we need a referee then? In your ideal world, football would be a pure anarchy with no rules and no limits.
We can complain bout anything in the world. I can even complain that Wenger complains too much. I'm juz saying that Wenger complains too much.

Haha to tell u the truth I used to dive a lot when playing soccer, but ever since a referee is introduced I have to cut it down. Imagine, 1 yellow card for every match I played!

Wenger blasts Ruud despite apology

Ruud van Nistelrooy's apology to Ashley Cole does not look like ending his feud with Arsenal after Arsene Wenger launched another bitter attack on the Dutchman.

Van Nistelrooy began the first suspension of his Manchester United career tonight after pleading guilty to the charge of serious foul play levelled against him by the Football Association following his crude tackle on Cole during the Red Devils' 2-0 win at Old Trafford.

Under the FA's new fast-track disciplinary process, the striker will also miss Saturday's trip to Portsmouth and the November 7 Manchester derby as a result of the challenge BBC pundit Alan Hansen labelled `a disgrace'.

Van Nistelrooy maintains the incident was not premeditated but TV replays looked bad, prompting the apology to Cole which accompanied a vehement defence of his disciplinary record.

'There was no deliberate intent to harm Ashley Cole and I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to him,' said Van Nistelrooy.

'Throughout my 10-year career I believe my disciplinary record is very good, not only for Manchester United but at all my previous clubs.

'I accept the charge made by the FA and I take full responsibility for this incident.'

However, van Nistelrooy's stance is unlikely to win him too much sympathy at Highbury and Wenger's latest comments will not do much to ease the on-going tension between England's biggest clubs.

The striker was already public enemy number one among the Gunners for his role in getting Patrick Vieira dismissed on Arsenal's previous Premiership visit to Old Trafford 13 months ago.

On that occasion, the 28-year-old was mobbed by angry visiting players after missing a last-gasp penalty.

This season, van Nistelrooy did not miss - either Cole or the net after he was offered a chance to redeem himself for his previous spot-kick blunder.

Wenger was seething at the former PSV Eindhoven man's challenge, labelling him a cheat, a statement that could yet land the Frenchman in trouble with the FA, an accusation that prompted the `soupgate' tunnel scandal which United have been so keen to play down.

It is the latest in a series of misguided challenges by van Nistelrooy, who escaped without censure last week after catching Sparta Prague defender Pavel Pergl in the face with a stray elbow.

The prolific forward is clearly earning himself a bad reputation and Wenger is not in the mood to offer forgiveness.

'Van Nistelrooy is a big enough player just to come and play football,' said the Arsenal chief.

'I have no preconceived ideas about him but what is he doing carrying out such silly things.

'If you look at the video again it wasn't just the challenge on Ashley Cole, he also steps on Jens Lehmann in the second half and it's clearly on purpose.

'He does it like he is always innocent. Who is he trying to impress by doing that.

'Why can't he just play football and forget all the rest.'

Wenger is stil angry.

Let me rephrase this:

What I meant is that Ruud has apologised and facing punishment.

But I don't think Ruud cannot be forgiven THAT easily by Arsenal fans.

Of course the Arsenal fans are going to be bitter for decades to come, but the manager should surely be a bit more professional and not keep attacking the player after he's received a suspension and apologised.

Heh heh... they should have been throwing macaroni and cheese :D

Cole Threw Pizza At Fergie!
10/27/2004 12:37:00 PM
The mystery of who threw what at Sir Alex Ferguson has been solved by The Sun, with Ashley Cole and pizza being identified as the culprits.
There has been much speculation as to what went on in the tunnel at Old Trafford after United's 2-0 win against the Gunners on Sunday.

However, according to the tabloid newspaper, Cole, and not Cesc Fabregas as previously reported, grabbed a slice of pizza, rather than soup as originally claimed, from the dressing room with the intention of throwing at Ruud van Nistelrooy, only for it to hit Ferguson instead.

Ferguson hasn't commented on the incident, while Arsene Wenger has downplayed the issue in typical style.

"Nothing happened after the game," said Wenger. "Nothing at all."

After being asked why Fergie changed his shirt before conducting his post-match interview, he said: "Why should I know what happened to Alex Ferguson’s shirt? Ferguson should know and he should say so."
