I remember. Actually everyone was fed up with Ranieri's defensive system and mentality and when we brought Ciro in he was asked if he would play more offensive than what Ranieri's system used to be and he said he would play an attacking football.
Yet he fielded a 4-3-2-1 with three defensive midfielders (that's one more defensive midfielder than Ranieri's formation) ONLY to fit Diego in the team.

The overarching difference between then and now is that first, we're not in the advantageous position that Guardiola was. We're at a critical juncture in our recovery from calciopoli. This season is really make or break for us and the inexperienced group of players we have should not be handed to any new coach. Second, we have two examples to learn off that should have deterred the management from hiring Conte and certainly deterred Conte from accepting. Ferrara unfortunately didn't have the luxury of knowing the fate of two inexperienced managers at this post-calciopoli Juve, Conte did.
Look, this move has failure written all over it. I've felt very strongly about hiring a Capello, or Ancellotti. And my reasoning has been that these guys can run a club and a team without any dependence on the experience or lack thereof, of the management backing it. Ferrara's failure wasn't his inexperience or formation, his failure was the lack of support he got from the people running this club. Which is what will be the case, if Conte is faced with tough times, he won't know what to do, coz there'll be no one to turn to. I don't think Conte can be blamed for accepting the job, knowing how Ferrara ended up. Instead, by that measure, you could also say that he's understood what mistakes were made, and could consciously avoid repeating them. Hindsight here, is a double edged sword of sorts. You and I as fans, can see what a critical juncture we're at, like you rightly point out, but Conte's perspective doesn't have to match ours, and probably doesnt, since he has been a lot closer to this club than we can ever be. And thats one of the reasons why its harder for him to see it the way you and I are. Also, just because Ferrara failed, doesn't mean Conte will. There are a lot of variables here. I'm not saying he won't, all I mean is, the conditions and environment of that failure would be different. I hope I haven't confused you with what I'm trying to say :)

Not really. No one has ever said that Ciro plays an attacking football. Conte does, and it's fact.

See? My point:p
Thats easier said than done though, we have been playing defensive football like forever and we only played possession football back in the zizou days.

We need charismatic players and a very pursuative coach to actually make such a huge difference and become the new Barca, i really doubt that we have the cash to buy Aquero and Pastore and Hazard/Bastos, even if we sell Amauri, Melo or Sissoko and scrap Matri or Quaq, Pepe, Motta and Aquilani.

Marotta said that we are going for two champions and keep at least 3-4 of the loaned players. And if one of the new champions is a RB, the attacking team is out of the question with just one or 2 of Aquero, Drenthe or Pastore joining us.

Conte will lack the tools and exp to impose such a dramatic change in his first year, in serie A and with a team in our caliber.
Take the RM for ex, many coaches (including stubborn and imposing Cap) came and gone, but only Mourinho actually managed to change their core tactics.

Not at all. I don't completely disagree. I would argue though that depending on how this mercato goes the conditions for success could be even less conductive to Conte next season. I don't really blame him for taking the job, he's blinded by his enthusiasm and love for the club which isn't necessarily a bad thing but unfortunately taking this on could be damaging to the club and his career. Good posting

Would you class 3rd place as success right now?
Normally, 3rd place should never be a success. But with everything that has been going on, if we can play some good football, play with passion and respect the club they're representing(unlike these last 2 seasons) and be involved in the Scudetto race then 3rd is good.

You forgot three things though, we should also do a better mercato than Genoa, Fiorentina and Roma.
