I think that in order for Juve to be truly competitive on all fronts, aside from the obvious need to upgrading the quality in attack, that there is a need for better reinforcements in defense.

Think about it. Who are the starting three on the Italian NT? Exactly. Take into consideration how many matches those three guys play, plus Serie A, the CL, and the Coppa. The only way they get a day off is through injury, suspension, or if they are playing a bottom of the table team.

To get someone like Ogbonna who can step in, and provide real quality off the bench as a defender is critical to Juve's goal of advancing on all fronts, in all competitions.

And let's also take into consideration that if Juve truly do value Marrone, then he provides an instant upgrade to the midfield rotation, without having to spend a dime.

Assuming that he is not included in any deals, of course.

We're trying to reach a situation where we can lose key players and have good quality coming in. We'll still have the usual try-hards who will only ever be squad players, but they are still important in their role.

And of course we have one or two (depending on your view) areas to address in terms of starters.

There's a strong chance that he will develop to be much better than Caceres (if he hasn't reached that level already) . When I studied in Italy I watched a few of his games for Torino and he definitely earned his place in the Azzurri squad and from Serie B no less. He won't develop here unless there's a long term injury but I do think that if a backup is called upon, he will have impressed Conte enough to get the first pick.

Moreover, this forum has made a habit out of underrating and overrating players considerably. Caceres is so great and Isla sucks. Get real and do your research for heavens sake.

Ogbonna had a very poor season according to the Italian newspapers ratings.

In Gazzetta's ratings, of all the defenders in the league that played +20 matches, he's 65th out of 86 defenders, with a media rating of 5,75. Even the Turin based Tuttosport gave him a media 5,80 rating for the whole season.*
Compared to the other Torino defenders, he's behind all of them.

I guess Conte is seeing something in him. The same thing Prandelli saw previously. But all he has are his serie B performances against inferior players. His serie A season, at least judging from the ratings and those who watched him, has been almost a catastrophe. It's yet to be seen if we'd be paying for the hype or his quality. Then again, in the NT he got to play and do the training with a lot of Juventus defenders, and perhaps they were the ones who recognized the quality.

* In order to see how biased Tuttosport is about Turin based players, note that according to Tuttosport, the best 5 defenders in serie A last year were Torino's Rodriguez (6,48) and D' Ambrosio (6,31), as well as Juve's Barzagli (6,44), Chiellini (6,35) and Bonucci (6,26). Only behind them in 6th place is Campagnaro with 6,23 :p And even the incredibly biased Tuttosport gave a petty 5,80 to Ogbonna. It must have been a terrible season for him.

There is no doubt he has the quality to become a really good defender.
Before his injury he looked very good infact,i watched some of their games.
Not to mention he is pretty good on the ball which i guess conte appreciates that aspect in him.

He definitely had a below average season. Two things you should also mention are that more is expected of him, so he will be marked more harshly by those Tuttosport critics. Also, his season was plagued by injuries (he sat out 10 including one spell for two months), so it will take him some time to get to his peak level.

This is probably the reason(s) Prandelli did not include him in his squad. It's a risk for us, but also has good potential. If he comes off the back of a stronger season the price is going to be upwards of €15m with others (including PL sides) still keen.

To be honest I've only heard about this OgBoner guy as I haven't seen Torino matches to make any opinions. He seems to be rated by a lot of people, so he must be mustard ;)

I'll stick behind the management if they Persue this transfer. Unlike Shake Ya Bootie ;)

It definitely was a bad season for him. Injuries can have a huge effect on a players form, especially when it interrupts season preparation.

With a three CB back line, Caceres isn't enough.

We don't have one true CB back up. Peluso is a LB, Marrone is a CM, and Caceres is a RB.

Ogbonna would be a true, quality CB and could relieve exhaustion from our defenders and injury cases.

Depending on the price, this is a player you cannot pass up. We don't even have a true CB backup right now. If you're looking for one, why not one familiar with Serie A and one who has played quite a bit with our current defense in a 3 man backline? How tailor made a fit is this! The transition to Juve should be absolutely seamless for Ogbonna.

Plus, my feeling is that he fits a 3 man backline a bit better than 4 man. I think his preferred position probably goes: 3 man CB, 3 man sweeper, 4 man CB.

And he's left-footed which is rare. Chiellini is one of the hardest players to find a replacement for and we might have just found his backup.

And then, of course, Ogbonna really lacks nothing in terms of talent or athleticism in order to progress into a top CB. It's a slam dunk move for now and the future. Perhaps his performances last year weren't up to snuff all the time but this is a move you have to risk a little on because of all the connections he has with us.

I think you shold post all these ratings for our entire team somewhere. It would make for an interesting discussion :D
