I personally find this binary split into attacking and defensive teams overly simplistic. Football tactics are a bit more multifaceted than that, there are a range of different styles and ways to play football. The other thing that I've never really fully understood is what is considered an "attacking" team. Because some teams that score plenty of goals are not necessarily considered "attacking" teams, it seems the term often refers to teams that play possession based football but surely a better way to describe possession based teams would be "possession based team".

I just don't have any confidence in Pirlo's ability as a coach and think giving him more time is another risky experiment. For me, we are on the wrong path and can see us getting worse.

But even he was miles better than Pirlo. At least he was a real manager. And we did play some good games with Sarri which never really happened with Pirlo. With Pirlo we were ok at best a few times.

Just out of curiosity, why do you believe we can improve under Pirlo? It's not like he has a winning track record as coach. If anything, we have regressed as the season progressed. Furtrhermore, there is no evidence that he has some brilliant ideas that he needs more time to implement other than the regular "trust the project" from Paratici after every game we look clueless.

You're right, we are his first stop in his training career. Nothing says he will be a winning coach.
I just think chances a new coach will do more harm then giving Pirlo more time to figure things out is higher.
Our management decided to go down this path, now give this man a proper season. My only demand would be Champions League Football.

If only that kind of coach was available. Someone capable of setting up the team, making our defense look solid and impenetrable, working out multiple formations until finding the right one. Doesnt matter that managment will prolly keep selling important players every summer, but he would still deliver results, trophies more importantly. This kind of coach seems just too perfect to be true and I bet we wouldnt ever fire hm and fans would never complain, when we would grind out results...

Give me an EPL style system all day long where the manager has more of a say with transfers and in that case, the directors simply have to oblige.

it's a hard one tbh. get a coach, feed him with players, and when the project fails, you're stuck with some useless guys that wouldn't serve the new coach.

imagine buying players for maurice just to realize half a year later than he's not your guy.

By that logic next season won't be proper either. And the sqaud is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. It's not a CL winning squad, but it's a squad that should have been leading Serie A and eliminating the likes of Porto with any average or above average coach.

Defending do work very fine but you have to find a healthy balance as I see it.

Atletico are the only team I somehow think got very close to succeed playing a defensive game, Chelsea against Barca first and then us in 2012 was luck you only see once in a millennium, I still don't understand how we lost that final.

I think Bayern in 2013 and Real Madrid in 2017 combined it nearly to perfection, Juve as well in 2015 and 2017.

Its not about preference anymore when 9 out of 10 times CL is won by an attacking team or the team who isnt necessarily attacking per se but whose attacks are just deadly (Zidane's Real, Ancelotti's Milan & Real).
If you want to win (CL) you have to be attack minded.

This is very telling, whether you like it or not. Juve has not been a feared club since Lippi. You dont instill fear by being a defensive team, you instill it by creating the presumption that this team can score any second. Its that very fear that gifts the win to those teams out of nowhere sometimes (Karius vs Real, Bayern's keeper vs Real etc).

No one style is better or worse, such thing doesn't exist. There is only teams who do what they do the right way and have the ability to compensate for weakness, and there is always weaknesses no team is without one.

I am sure that was part of the reasoning behind us firing Max and hiring Sarri and then Pirlo. It's hard to argue that we didn't have this shit we're in coming. We deserve at least a few seasons of 7th place finishes to learn our lesson. But then it will probably be forgotten in a year. That's the nature of football fans.

Max is so unappreciated. Our treatment of him was criminal.

You instill fear in them by them knowing if they try to press too much and lose the ball against run of play and get countered, if the opponent scores, it's goodnight for you because you are never entering that opponents box again, that you might lose the 2 legs by one goal so then the attacker will shit his pants and think twice and pick when to attack. So now you control thier attacking with your defending. It's a balance, you can run your mouth until next week but logic is logic.
