I agree. They need to stick with a 3 man line. They barely have enough talent for a 3 man d-line.
Apparently we are switching to 4-3 we will draft Allen. What's your take on making a move for Jimmy Garopollo/cousins ? Surely they'd need a first rounder next year? If the plan is to go for a qb with the first next year anyway..

Trade down at that point if they are going to draft Allen. I'm not convinced that he is the 2nd best defensive player in this draft.

Everyone here knows how much I love Garoppolo. But I am unsure if I would trade the #2 pick. If they move down into the #8 or 9 spot, and acquire more picks in that deal, then I would have no issue trading said 1st round pick for him. I absolutely love Garoppolo

I would think Jimmy G is more valuable to the Patriots than a single 1st round pick because of how much more important the QB position is than any other in football.
Think of it this way - what is the difference, big-picture-wise, between the Texans with JJ Watt and w/o him? None, absolutely none - as great a player as Watt may be, he is of virtually no consequence when it comes to making his team a title-contender or not.
In fact, I'd argue the Texans without Watt but with a good, not great QB would be a more serious contender than the Texans with a scrub QB and JJ Watt in full health.
And I am using one of the very best non-QB players of his generation as an example. You think the Pats would be able to get the JJ Watt equivalent, at any position, with that 1st round pick they presumably get for Jimmy G? Highly unlikely ...

Brady and the Pats hope he can play another 3-5 years, assuming he avoids any serious injuries, but truth is every next season could be his last. Keeping Jimmy G for the last year on his rookie deal and potentially another year under the franchise tag (Patriots could have over 70 mil of cap room now after a couple of restructures) would give the Pats two years of insurance for Brady in a period of his career where such good insurance is of premium value.

Thus, if Patriots were to trade Jimmy G, it would have to be for multiple 1st round picks or a swap of 1st rounders this year and a 1st in 2018 or something like that.
Either way, I would expect a 1st rounder in 2018 to be a major point in any trade they would be looking to make for Jimmy G.
The QB class of 2018 is expected to be a really good one with several 5-star prospects likely to declare, so Pats would be aiming at pulling a Packers-Rodgers thing there.
Potentially taking a QB in the 1st in 2018 would guarantee the Pats 5 years of manageable salary cap-hit for Brady's successor.

Of course the above is making the assumption that the Patriots value Jimmy G enough to see him as their next franchise QB once Brady retires.
If that turns out not to be the case and the Pats accept a lower trade offer for Jimmy G, basically looking to cash out on him while they still can, then I'd be super-duper worried if I were that other team as it would most likely mean they just got bent over a barrel by BB ... again. :D

How is Allen any better of a fit in 4-3 than say Buckner. I love Jon Allen just don't see how he is all that diff than what 9ers already have in Buckner and Armstead - 3-4 DEs who could play interior rusher in 4-3, next to a DT/NT.

I'd think, with the transition to 4-3, someone like Solomon Thomas would be a better fit to a need for the 9ers. Not sure if he is worth taking at #2 but it's not that far off either - I think Thomas doesn't drop out of top 10. Maybe 9ers could trade back a bit and take him there.
