On a punt, once the ball is caught after a fair catch is called the ball is whistled dead unless the player dops it then it's considered a fumble. However, the rule isn't applicable in this scenario.
It makes way more sense to argue that once a catch is made (2 feet in bounds and the ball held for a count of 3) everything after that is a fumble. At that point it's only a question of whether the fumble was caused by the ground or not.

I remember some previous terminology akin to 2 feet, "and make a football move," or something like that. I can't remember exactly. But I don't think there was ever a specific rule about holding the ball for a count of 3.
Anyway, talk about a frustrating play. Maybe by the letter of the law the officials got it right, but if that's the case, then the rule simply needs to be changed. That was ridiculous.
Two feet in, definitely had control of the ball, ass hits the turf, and then the ball is finally knocked out when it hits the ground. Megatron made an awesome play, that should be a touchdown.

We did well in the first half moving the ball around, especially with Best. First half was pretty close. Then Stafford was hit hard and injured his shoulder, and after that we were pretty useless except for the last few plays of the game. In the 4th, the Bears had the ball deep in our end and they went for the TD on 4th down, but our defense stopped them. It was one of the best stops I've seen the team make. Then we immediately took the ball down field, Hill made a good throw to Calvin in double coverage who caught the ball with two feet then hit the ground, but the officials reviewed the play and ruled it as incomplete. And that was it.

I wouldn't be so upset if this was week 12 in which the majority of the games were losses, but this was the first game of the season. This is fucked up on so many levels. 1-0 Lions going back to Detroit, a win against division rivals away from home... you gotta be kidding me.

Well it's definitely fair to say that the jury is still out on that one. Until the team wins consistently, that's always going to be in question. He's pretty green anyway, so it's definitely still a learning process.
Thing is, so much of being a head coach is that motivational aspect... player management is so key. Like you said, he's great at that. Anyway, this was a setback, but I think he's definitely got us headed in the right direction.
I did really like Sing's decisions to go for those two 4th down plays. Loved them at the time, still do. Play calling was excellent on those particular plays as well, it's just all down to players executing. Alex is really worrying...
We should have added some depth that could actually push the guy. David Carr is a joke, and there's no pressure on Smith for job security. Hell, for my money, we should have inquired about McNabb. Probably would have been cheaper than the Skins price too, due to the NFC east factor.
Haven't seen much of Clausen, so I can't really rate him, but at the time (with all of our high picks) I thought we might have tried to make a move for him as well.
Our QB situation is as unacceptable as Juventus' fullback situation right now... very questionable/poor starter(s) (banking on perceived potential), and absolutely no legitimate depth, for way too long.
