Like It or Not, Calvin Johnson Call Correct
September, 12, 2010

By Kevin Seifert

CHICAGO -- OK, first things first. I know everyone is talking about Calvin Johnson's touchdown-turned-incomplete-pass, the one that would have given the Detroit Lions a victory against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field but instead was their third-to-last play of a 19-14 loss.

I'm sorry to tell you this, Lions fans, but the call was 100 percent right based on NFL rules. In fact, the play is similar to the one we discussed last season in the Dirty Laundry feature that explained why Green Bay Packers receiver Greg Jennings lost a touchdown against the Bears. Again, here is the wording of the NFL rules that applies to both catches:

If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball after he touches the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete.

I know it doesn't make intuitive sense. I know Johnson made a leaping catch of a 25-yard pass from Shaun Hill. There is no doubt he had two feet in bounds while maintaining possession. But Johnson dropped the ball after he landed on the ground and didn't regain possession.

I didn't like the rule last year and I don't like it now. But based on the wording of above, officials were correct to overturn the original touchdown call and rule it incomplete. The same goes for the booth replay official, who upheld the decision. Like it or not, that play is an incomplete pass in the NFL.

To their credit, the Lions mostly agreed.

"The rule is if you are going to the ground in the process of making the catch, you need to finish with the football," coach Jim Schwartz said. "And we didn't finish with the football."

Johnson was less diplomatic but ultimately didn't challenge it.

"We have to move past it," Johnson said. "Can't do nothing about the call. I'm not saying nothing about the referees or nothing like that. It is what it is."

Unfortunately for the Lions, "it" was an incomplete pass.

I saw the replay a couple of times and think it was a TD, I believe the rule to be a good idea, just enforced stupidly.

neither team should have won that game, but I'll take the Dallas loss anyday
Yea I'll take that shit any day.
Did anyone see the injury to Philly's pro bowl FB Leonard Weaver? It was pretty gross
Where he got his leg bent backwards? Yea that was not very nice looking shit.

What a horrible game in Seattle yesterday. I can't even blame the defense for this. Not when Alex Smith is up to his usual antics out there. Totally overthrows Crabtree on that out pattern that led to the pick 6, throws a 90 mph fastball at crabtree when he's only 4 yards away that led to the other interception. Missing a wide open Moran Norris on 4th and goal, and once again, clock management seems to be a problem again this year.

But hey. They get a break this week. New Orleans at home on Monday Night. yay.

Hopefully they will draft high enough to select a real quarteback this year.

Niners are terrible, tell me again why you are not a glory hunter?
Yes, I am the definition of a glory hunter, for you see I am a fan of an NFL team that hasn't won anything in 16, going on 17 years.

Yeah, that's me.

Dalten - No arm.

Mallet - No feet.

Moore - can't throw down field, probably going to be overlooked due to his playing in a spread/gimmic offense.

Best option - Jake Locker

Also, there are guys like Kase Keenum out of Houston that are overlooked.

You're talking about Jake Locker from Washington.

The kid I want is Andrew Luck from Stanford.

I mean, I'm watching the game on my computer through a 6 inch window, and once overthrew Moran Norris when he was wide open on 4th and goal, I could see the air coming out of Simth's tires. And I'm getting a little tired of the lack of clock management from the sidelines, to tell you the truth.

And Clements shouldn't be gambling on the out and up like that. He's been around for a while, and should know better. That was a rookie mistake, and he doesn't get a lot of INT's for someone who is upposed to be a gambler as a corner.

Why you always gotta hate on the young bloods? :D

Remember, all these things were said about QB's like Brady, Romo, Warner, etc..

You can't rate intangibles, but you can overlook footwork and other things

I didn't catch any of the UCLA-Stanford game but I saw the scoreline. I'll check out some of the kid's HL's

Luck's pretty good. He was great as a freshman, but I don't really see him leaving Stanford short of four years.

I'm not hating, it's just that all those guys have holes in their games. Brady, Warner, and Romo didn't start right away. Warner spent time in the Arena league and got much faster with his release, Brady sat behind a solid starter in Bledsoe for a few seasons before he got his chance, as did Romo.

Footwork may not be as important as leadership. Intangibles are nice, but if you've got Tim Tebows arm the furthest they'll take you is offensive co-ordinator.:D
