Yes, it does. He's being asked to do something different and it doesn't suit him.
Every players falls down, or shines under some coach. I honestly believe Aquilani is one of those who can't get their potential on the surface under Del Neri, simply because I've seen him under different light in Rome. Melo had a shit season and he played different before while same can go for Sissoko, who was shining under Ranieri.

And even if he is being asked to play an entirely different role, it's not an excuse for me. I could understand him not shining because of it, I do not understand him not even trying his best. I want the players to give it their all, every time they step on the pitch.

I'd say that role doesn't suit him. 
I don't say I'm right but I try to find a solution, at least based on his earlier matches and not just Juve ones.
I think he had a better regista role before, when he was also more involved in attack. He was using his creativity, taking long shots and running back to get ball much more while here his game looks pretty simple and different, based on center of midfield where he dictates the tempo and plays short passes.
