When Cuadrado was in top assisting form, the balls in the box were going for Cristiano, not Rabiot. When Dybala and Cristiano were here, we played a different system. Could it be that it's the system+the two great assistmen that make Rabiot look so good.
If that's the case, then it won't be so easy to decide against offering him a new contract.

good point. i forgot we used to play that stupid 4-4-2 where he would play as a LM or sometimes even a RM.

That theory falls on its face because it relies on the premise that rabiot showed the same effort in past seasons. It's really easy to not offer him a contract, as easy as it was not to offer pogba a contract.

I'm currently in favour of renewing Rabiot and I say its clear as day that he is working much much harder now than earlier this season (I didn't watch the previous couple so can't comment).

I still say its worth the risk, but not for 10 mil.

It's not imo and it's myopic to look at strictly the accounting cost if the bum gets 10 mil you setting a new bar for both incoming and current players. It's just a bad idea that no rationalizing will fix.

Who do we replace him with? How much will it cost? Can you be sure it's not partly the system and manager that works for him and not just that he's suddenly started caring?

For 10 it's a no from me. We can't afford that. We need to be clear how the wage structure is going to be going forward. Never mind raviot, the best lesson to learn from is Pogba. We can't risk that again. Or various from the previous management.

Managers should have extended his contract before the contract running out. Don't let he moves for free. If Rabiot leaves we surely go for replacement in order to fill that gap and That will cost us more than Rabiot's salary. That's good enough for top 4 finish, and that's enough for a rebuild, granted we are working with a manager who has a multi year plan and a clear philosophy. I am much more concerned with that than figuring out a rabiot replacement. One can also argue rabiot contribution wouldn't be so obvious if we actually had a clear game plan as opposed to wing it and wait for the players to figure it out.

My counter argument would be:

- with how Fagioli and Locatelli have developed/shown themselves this year
- with Rovella impressing on loan and deserving of a chance just like Fagioli got
- with Miretti also deserving of minutes and having some good signs
- with Barrenechea showing some good signs of development
- with Arthur coming back this summer FOR SURE
- with Zakaria and/or McKennie coming back this summer POSSIBLY

AND THEN

- with our need at RB (Cambiaso fulfills our LB issues imo)
- with our need at CB (Gatti as our #3 is risky and we have no depth after him)
- with our need at CF (after Dusan, are we willing to rely just on Milik)
- with our need at RW/LW (if ADM leaves, we've got Chiesa, Iling, and Kostic for wings and thats it)

Why would we spend 10m wages on Rabiot? Is he better than Miretti? Probably. Is he better than Rovella? Probably. Is he better than Barrenechea? For sure. But with GREATER needs, we don't need to spend the money in midfield. Even if we have SLIGHT downgrades in midfield not playing him, we have MUCH WORSE downgrades at more important positions. MDS should NOT be anywhere near our 2nd depth RB next year. Period. Full stop. We need CB depth desperately. We have far more pressing needs than spend 10m to fill our deepest positon.

Nevermind we've never seen this Rabiot before. That cannot be understated. Even if you agree to the tactics issue in previous years, his desire wasn't there. He is playing out of his mind and I think we can all agree some of it is a new contract. Some of it is to draw EPL interest. But if even 1% of his NEW effort is due to a looming big contract on his horizon I don't want him here. That means that SOME part of his slacking, some part of his bad periods were because he was comfortable and lazy.
