Christian Panucci was punished for "offensive behaviour," while Antonio Cassano could miss Juve as Roma's discipline deteriorates.
The defender has not been included in the squad that will take on Palermo at the Stadio Olimpico tomorrow afternoon.
“He behaved offensively and disgracefully with me and with the team,” explained Coach Gigi Del Neri. “The incident happened today in training and he showed a lack of respect that cannot be tolerated.”
There are no details yet on what exactly caused the latest ruckus, but Panucci has a long history of rubbing tacticians and teammates up the wrong way.
“Those who do not respect the rules will be punished,” added the former Chievo boss, “and the club will take steps.”
It has been a tough few days for Panucci, who was sent off for jumping with his elbow raised during the 3-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. Yesterday UEFA inflicted a two-match Champions’ League ban for that same incident.
It is only the latest sign of trouble in a Giallorossi side that seems to be disintegrating from within. Philippe Mexes and Daniele De Rossi are also suspended in the Champions’ League for petulant kicks at opponents, while Antonio Cassano has already walked out on the team several times this season.
Cassano has also been left out of tomorrow’s Palermo match as he is training by himself – supposedly to help him get back his form, but this is a tactic often used with players in contract disputes.
"We all await Cassano's return with open arms and this is not a disciplinary measure," assured Del Neri. "His treatment will take 10-15 days, so it's likely he'll miss Thursday's Juventus game as well."
This week President Franco Sensi told the press, “I don’t know if we want to keep Cassano. It’s not a financial issue, it’s one of personality. His performance against Leverkusen was worthy of a slap.”

La sconfitta della Roma a Reggio Calabria è un duro colpo per il progetto del tecnico, messo sotto accusa per il nervosismo della squadra (di Totti in particolare) e per il fatto di aver schierato nuovamente Totti-Montella-Cassano, lasciando la difesa con il solo De Rossi a coprirla e con Mancini e Perrotta schierati in un ruolo a loro poco congeniale.

La quinta sconfitta stagionale ha messo ko Gigi Del Neri, che ha preferito non rilasciare dichiarazioni. We have to deal with a huge list of injured players, and some aren’t able to express their full potential as they lack personality,” he added, before offering his remedy for the team’s terrible situation.
“We need a positive streak. But right now we are lacking personality, the thing we need to get out of this sticky situation.”
Also captain Francesco Totti offered an apocalyptic vision to Roma’s current moment.
”It’s the worst moment ever I’ve been in at Roma. It’s better not to add anything,” he said.
