no one watched serie A outside italy before that, you can fault that to the limited tv coverage, but english and german were always the ones people watched most. When the best player in the world plays people obviously want to watch and he did that for serie A: exposure.

And it was Maradona that did that, rather than Italy being World champions or Juve having a great team with Platini & Co.?

I already watch the odd Dutch game.

Many of the world's best players play in Spain just now, but I don't like Spanish football, so I don't watch all that many La Liga matches.

I'm posing the question as, having not been alive at the point Maradona joined Napoli, I'm not really able to make a strong argument as to the level of popularity of Serie A before and after he joined or whether he was a key factor in any change.

I'm not going to say he didn't raise the level of interest.

My query was more that you said he put Serie A on the map, which suggests it wasn't on the map before.

I find it hard to believe that Serie A wasn't already fairly widely followed, even if Maradona's arrival took that interest up a notch or two.

it wasnt, and diego's arrival along with the ban of english teams from euro competitions helped serie A become the leader by the early 90s
