An interesting survey has been held in Western Europe for some football magazine which' name I forgot, asking people what fixture they would most like to see if they could NOT pick their most favourite nation. Frequent mentions were Holland-Brazil, England-Germany, France-Spain and Italy-Argentina.

What about you??

Since I can't choose Holland, I'd have to go with:

SPAIN-ARGENTINA. With the former to finally, finally win

I can't select Italy so I'd go with:

Brazil - Portugal, with Portugal to lose.

Not because I like Brazil that much, but for the much liked Portuguese melancholy.

And the Portuguese themselves would be the first to admit their melancholy. It's like the loserdom of the Chicago Cubs baseball team.

My wife, who comes from a Portuguese family (the Azores, in fact), tells me how it would have been much more fun growing up as a Portuguese-speaking Brazilian instead. Whereas the Portuguese would often dwell upon their misfortunes and how difficult life is, the Brazilians of course would say, "Yeah, we're poor, but so what? Pour the cachaça and let's dance!" (Just listen to traditional Portuguese music, like Fado, and contrast it with a Samba.)

While I think Portugal will fare quite well in the next WC, I don't see them making it past the quarterfinals.

My final pick?

I'm picking a juicy one with surprises:

Argentina-Germany (yes, Germany), with Argentina going home with the star.
