Molby: Xabi Is Irreplaceable
When Alonso first burst onto the scene at Anfield in 2004, the comparisons between he and Molby were almost instantaneous; team-mate John Arne Riise is on the record as saying the former Real Sociedad man did not miss a single pass until the 40th minute of his debut.
The Spain international looked set to become a Liverpool legend, establishing himself in a talent-crowded midfield alongside Steven Gerrard, Dietmar Hamann and Momo Sissoko.
The latter two have since moved on as Javier Mascherano has risen to prominence following his controversial move from West Ham, and Alonso’s place is now under threat as the Reds prepare to swoop for Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry.
The 26-year-old is looking increasing likely to follow Sissoko to Juventus, and reports suggest negotiations are already well underway to take the Basque playmaker to Turin for ₤16 million.
But Molby believes Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez would be making a huge mistake if he let Alonso leave Merseyside, insisting players of his quality and style are almost impossible to replace.
Once In A Lifetime
"They're once in a lifetime, players who can play, players who can dominate games like he can," said the former Denmark midfielder.
"There are always players at every football club you're so reluctant to see leave and I think Xabi falls into that category.
"We don't really want him to leave but maybe it makes sense if the fee that has been bandied about is the correct fee from Juventus."
