I don't think anyone here is questioning alonso's class (cause he's a WC nodoubt). The only issue here is he's price...Is he worth 20 millions? If we're gonna spend around 20 million euros on a CM then he bitter be special. I mean the kind of players that can make a big difference in any game.

The other issue is he's age, he'll be 27 in november so he's likely gonna be on top of he's game for the next 5 years. R we willing to spend another 20 million euros or so on another player to replace him in 5-6 years time?

Tottenham bought modric for 20 million euros and he's IMO one of the best midfielders in the game and still just 22 years old. They've invested 20 million euros on a player that can last for 10 years atleast, same thing goes to milan's pato and atletico's aguero.....

Yes, I watch EPL a lot and I've seen Arteta play for Everton. He's a very good player, but he would not make it in a big club in my opinion.

EDIT: And as Bozi said, Arteta is not a winger.
:agree: he was good at PSG, he was good at Rangers and he is good at everton but when he was sold to Sociedad he could not carry the team when given the full resposibility of being the main man. gfood player but not top drawer

good post boz, its not a rule that coz he is a spanish he cant cut it out in italy. xabi is miles ahead both tiago and almiron so i think its a good add to our asquad if we add him its beyond me how people would want some one else.
exactly xabi may play deep but he aint no emerson type player, for years we have watched pirlo play like a footballing quarterback and i am sure alonso would bring this to juve. like it has been said before, the man was so good for liverpool that stevie g had to play on the righ of midfield

5 years is pretty sufficent for me.We got Nedved when he was older than Alonso, and he's turned into a club icon. There is no reason why Alonso cannot do the same.
what a piece of business that was

1 thing bothering me,

IF we have Alonso,Sissoko,Zanetti and Marchisio will NOT come back.
i think we need a 4th option in Midfield...no?

In Case that Almiron & Tiago both sold ofcourse.

Maybe Cigarini.
Cigarini should already been bought imo. He'll cost little to nothing, parma struggle financially, and going to serie-b surely didn't help them. I'd wonder if they can even hold some of their players. Why not make an agreement with them where cigarini is bought but remains at parma on loan. I'm pretty sure parma can be convinced to do so, because they won't be able to buy lots of new players anyway...

Arteta is a decent player, but better than Xabi Alonso? No way IMO.
Of course not. But they cant be compared anyway, completely different players/
My god,in all my conversations with people who live out of football game I never heard that someone compared a defensive midfielder and a winger!

Other than that....do you watch premiership? Did you ever saw Arteta performing in Everton shirt?
Arteta is like Bozi said, more of a central attacking midfielder that plays out wide. But i agree with you in the sense that he cant be compared to Alonso, both are very different players that perform different roles

No let's sign fifteen-year old boy and keep him with us till he turns 40, will that be good investment?

one can argue about whether or not alonso may be a reinforcement, but one thing is sure; his age is NOT a problem. I mean, he turns 27, that's probably the peak of everyone's career (statistically speaking). And considering that most players (who do good) play until they are 31-33, that leaves us another 5 years, which is like the perfect situation. He plays as CM, and he'd have to organize our midfield. That's a thing some 17-yr-old wonder kid from Brazil CANNOT do.

People saying 20 mio for him is too much are right imo, because with 20 mio, we could aim for other people too (i'm thinking about aquilani, or maybe someone else). BUT (as always, there's a 'but') xabi alonso has proved that he could play in spain (on a more technical level) as well as in england (on a more physical level) and he may be just the thing we need in our midfield.

Anyway, we can argue about him a lot, but his age surely is NOT a problem.

modric=22, samir nasri=21, aguero= 19.....All of them r young and great even in their young age. xavi alonso himself was 22-23 years old when he first came to liverpool and back then top teams were after him (real madrid). Liverpool paid like 13 million euros for his service, played him for 4 years and now their selling him for a profit (thats IMO a great business).....We did the same with zidane and it was one of the best deals perhaps in football history........
