So I haven't heard anything about fan violence yet.

What happened to the epic battle of Russian paramilitary ultras vs. England's finest weekend warriors I was promised?

Actually unlike any world cup I've seen, there's very little coverage of anything outside the stadium: fan zones, viewing centres/parties or any kind of footage of happenings in the cities

These games could all be playing in different countries for all I know. Nothing Russian about them

I don't think we will be witnessing any of this nonsense (fingers crossed) because the authorities here have been pretty clear with regards to hooliganism and apparently all parties thinking of starting any action have been warned well in advance.

Weird. I hadn't thought about that but you are right. In 2014 there was a shitload of endless talk about Brazilian culture and footage of cities and people. It was actually really annoying because 5 minutes before kick off and the pundits had barely spoken about upcoming game, just brazil.

I wonder if it has to do with Russia being a bit of a controversial host.

Putin not being a popular figure and Russia being far from a liberal culture for 2018

Yea, I'm not hoping for anything

Definitely. But I figured some would forget that after enough beers
